Hayseed Dixie

Anyone else come across this band? Seems they’ve been around for a while (at least 3 albums) but I’ve only heard them mentioned in the last few weeks, possibly because they played Nottingham Rock City recently.

I bought an album yesterday. Brilliant fun. They play AC/DC, Motorhead and other classic 1970s/80s heavy metal… in a bluegrass style: acoustic banjo, guitar, fiddle, bass, mandolin etc.

It’s not just a novelty, or a joke. These are clearly highly skilled musicians who respect the music. It’s not just squeezing the rock songs into a blue grass straitjacket, either, because they make a serious effort to keep some of the original rock riffs and rhythms. And it’s not just rock played on bluegrass instruments, because they use bluegrass rhythms and licks when appropriate too. The whole thing is done as serious music, but with a sense of humour.

Highly recommended.

Yup-

I have the album with “Fat Bottom Girls” and “my Best Friends Girlfriend” on it. I like 'em.

/Centerfold is on there as well.

Yeah, Chris Moyles, the breakfast DJ on the biggest radio station in the UK (Radio 1) has had them in a few times to do live sets, Outcast’s ‘Miss Jackson’ was particularly fantastic, and a drift from their ususal rock agenda. I should probably get their CD or something.

Edit:Am i right in thinking that their name is a rip off of ACDC?

That’s what I was told.

My brother-in-law burned a disc for me a few years ago. I listened to it once and loaned it to a friend. Haven’t heard them since.

It is good stuff.

Their name is clearly a reference to AC/DC, but they are not a tribute band as they play in their own style.

I went to see Limehouse Lizzy, a Thin Lizzy tribute band, on Friday. I don’t think I like tribute bands. Cover versions of good songs, good; half-hearted attempts to impersonate dead singers, bad.

that’s really really weird. I’m listening to sympathy for the devil right now courtesy of pandora (an awesome site), except there’s a banjo in the background.
