I love when people do things for crazy reasons rather than rational malice.

My guess is he just wanted to go home early on some days. Instead of delivering his mail, he just took it home with him.

Maybe he hoped he’d get it delivered within the next day or two but he never got around to it?

Maybe his intention was to throw it out, but he never got around to that either?
Maybe he threw out 10 times as much over the years.
