I purchased a Uni for my five year old the other day and it should be here next week- along with my air saddle (ahhh… a-i-r s-a-d-d-l-e).
If anyone has taught a child as young as 5 to unicycle and has any tips at all please let me know. As always I like to seek the advice of those who have rolled, hopped, pedal grabbed and ground down the rode before me.
Me and my 12 year old daughter both learned to Uni this summer and teaching/learning with her went fairly smooth. We could both ride a bit after about 10 hours practice). Now we motivate all over the place. My daughters only demon to overcome was fear, but I don’t think my son will suffer from that problem. So far he scooters (since he was 3), rides a two wheel bike (never had training wheels) skateboards and spends quite a lot of time in one of our trees- Ah yes just like me, when I was a boy (grin). He’s a Tony Hawk fan now, and I think he will soon join the ranks of unicycle fans.
I imagine there are many 5 year olds that can ride, we have one in our club. There is a picture of Patrick on page two of our gallery, http://www.unicyclist.com/gallery/theunicycleuniversity Patrick is riding an 18" Jugglebug in the picture which was a bit big for him (seatpost was too long). His father has since purchased Patrick his very own 16" unicycle and he is doing very well. He is very close to passing Level 2.
I believe it’s been said that one of John and Amy Drummond’s sons learned to ride a uni at age 4 before learning to ride a b*cycle.
I tried to teach my (then) 3 year old daughter and 5 year old son. They had
less interest in learning than I had in teaching them so I’ve backed off a
bit. My daughter is now 4 and occasionally will ask for a “lesson”.
For my kids (and I think all kids) the key is desire to learn and
willingness to practice.
