Has Anybody Died

Does anybody know if anybody has died unicycling outside of a performance act i.e. trail riding, trials, or attepting a 15’ plus drop? It occured to me that people like Kris Holm put themselves at that risk and that somebody out there must have killed himself trying, right?

well I know some people have died falling off a giraffe - there was a post on uni related deaths not long ago.

The worst I’ve done is some broken bones, some ligament, and some muscle damage.

To be honest I’m really glad nobody (to my knowlege) has injured them-selves incurably. I think Dustin is probably the worst case I know of.

Hope you’re up and healed soon Dustin

The giraffe broken back story I related a while back was heresay. I’m not sure if it really ever happened or not. In any case, it was a performance accident.

Trail riding is fairly new. And though there have been people riding unicycles on dirt since there were unicycles, only now is it becoming widespread. Yes, when unicycles were invented back in the 1870s, there were hardly any paved roads, so of course people were riding on dirt.

Brett Bymaster had a near-death experience on one of the group MUni rides at NUC '98 in Southern CA. I wasn’t there, but apparently he slipped off the trail and ended up straddling a tree branch with an extremely long drop underneath it.

But so far, in my experience, only broken bones and such. And most of those happened in the gym and on the track. So far.

I do remember a story about Cory Riback (maker of the UNICYCLE video) taking a bad fall with a broken frame or chain on his giraffe. He shattered his elbow, but I don’t know how this compares with Dustin’s (also a performance) mishap.

Can you give me some details? This is the first time I ever heard of a unicycle death.
