I was watching a pretty cool “behind the scenes” TV special on the making of the classic 1978 horror classic, “Halloween”. I was shocked, SHOCKED, to find out that Michael Myers’ mask was actually a slightly modified “Captain Kirk”/ William Shatner mask right off the rack!
They explained that their budget was very modest and so they couldn’t afford to hire a specialist to make one from scratch, so they just went to the local dime store and bought that one, cut the eye holes out a bit more, rfemoved the eyebrows, spray painted it a whiter color and messed the hair a bit and there it was!
From a budget of $325,000 the film went on to gross $47 million at the US box office. In 2008 takings that would be the equivalent of $150 million, making “Halloween” one of the most successful independent films of all time.
