And to this, one need merely say, try telling that to Martin Luther King Jr, the freedom riders, the lunch counter sit in participants, and the Quakers to name a few, all of whom exercised and do exercise their citizenship vehemently.
Sounds like you’re trying for the usual anti-gun-control argument, “Don’t take my guns away!” Uh, where’s the part about your right to bear arms being threatened or anyone trying to take your guns away? How about we start from there. Then we’ll be talking about the actual issues. Though politicians avoid doing that as much as possible, maybe we can.
I have one major problem with the way counties in my state handle gun ownership; they further restrict state law. I don’t mind that I had to fill out paperwork and have extensive background checks done to prove I wasn’t an insane killer before I got a gun license, it’s the fact that I now have a gun license but can only carry a gun to a hunting or target shooting area. I feel that a person who has proven they are trustworthy enough to own a pistol should be mature enough to decide when and where they carry it. I am a person who lives in the country, sometimes walking the dog alone on a dark night. I’m also a person who works in a downtown capital city and have been approached by scary people on my way to the car after work. But according to the county who issued my license, I can’t carry a gun in either of these situations.
For a second I thought that maybe someone responed to digital1s post in the other gun thread
My guns are for sport, food and a big part of my lifestyle, I have never considered one for protection from humans. I have a restricted (handgun) license but I can’t legally take a pistol with me when camping by myself in bear country.
Don’t confuse gun control will a blanket ban on gun ownership. I think that the recent history of severe and irrational gun related violence in the US should prompt sincere talks about the types of weapons that are allowed in the country.
If you like Hunting, give the animals a sporting chance and don’t use a fully automatic weapon for it. This would also help stop the scale of mass shootings that have been taking place recently- shootings that have been undertaken by depressed/deranged persons and have been only amplified by the types of weapon they have been able to get their hands on.
After the Port Arthur massacre which occurred here in Australia in 1996 which claimed 35 lives, the government controlled the weapons allowed to be held by citizens. Fully automatic and semi automatic weapons were banned (with the exception of competition specific handguns).
I feel safer in a country with these regulations than in one where it is much easier for extremely deadly weapons to be bought and sold so easily and fall into the wrong hands.
