My son and I just started our garden with three types of peas, which can be planted early.
We plan on adding peppers, scallions, potatoes, beans, pumpkins, maybe some musk melons. pickling cukes, too. I make a very HOT dill pickle that has won me many comlpiments.
Peanuts, that’s so cool! We tried to grow peanuts when I was a kid, but being a skeptic, I was certain that the ones we dug up were just the ones we planted.
Planting tomatoes and zuchinni is like letting your un-sterilized pet run 'round the neighborhood in spring time. How many times to the neighbors have to come by: Want some zuchinni? want some tomatoes? How about a kitten?
I just can’t accept the responsibility for tomatoes and zuchinni. No way. I will stick to neutered pets and plants that are not as prolific fruiters.
planted those last year, but this year even though I wanted to get a seed propagator (so that I’d be able to plant some of my flowers from seed indoors in time for summer this year) i’ve held off and it appears I’ll have to wait until next year because I’m saving up for a trials uni and I hope I’ll be able to get it before the BUC.
Lol, last year, my dad had got married amnd moved, so we planted a WHOLE bunch of stuff…
Fig tree, peach tree, lettuce, tomatoes, a LOT of flowers some wysteria (you can WATCH that stuff grow), some bell peppers, and some hotter peppers
yummy
Great picture. there is some kind of plant with round flattened pods in the background. What’s that?
I start my seeds indoors without a propagator. I cover the seeds/seedlings with clear plastic cups or pop bottles from which I cut the tops off and remove the labels. If it is too chilly, a 150 watt bulb over the set up gets it plenty warm. Doesn’t cost much.
I’ve been getting into cooking Thai food and so I am into peppers these days. I also got a pepper that is suposed to grow tons of fruits called Thai dragon. I plan on drying a lot of the hot peppers and those will be my Christmas presents this year.
I always try to make presents. It generally saves money and people are generally more receptive… even if they don’t like it!
Hey Monkeyman. I have wysteria in my yard, came with the new house. It is vining around the rain gutters and the grapes. I need to trim it back. I hear it will be beautiful!
Sure if you have a job, pay half the mortage, watch Bear while I’m training for tour Da UP, and enjoy plaster repair.
The basement is quite accomodating if you like a dirt floor. The fiberglass in the attic might be uncomfortable in the summer heat and humidity, but that’s the other option.
See you when school gets out!
Hops grows like crazy, too and it has pretty foliage. I am going to see if it is invasive here, if not, I may put up an arbor for some.
Hops is used to add some bitterness to beer and as a preservative. I used to hang with brewers, and so when I have a beer I have discriminating taste. I do like a very hoppy beer.
Other herbs can ane used to be used such as rosemary and marjoram giving a very different flavor.
Two summers ago I worked as a helper for a rich old man with a huge garden in his back yard. I mostly just spread mulch, pulled weeds, shoveled gravel and laid a brick path, but it was definately the best job I’ve ever had.
Now I’m living in an intentional community in Richmond’s Oregon Hill neighborhood, and one of my roommates and I are starting a garden on the roof of our garage/pottery studio. She’s already started some sun flowers, marigolds, snapdragons, cherry tomatos, and other flowers. I’m in the process of making two 6 foot long flower boxes out of bamboo. I’m more interested in veggies and herbs than flowers, but I don’t know what veggies I can grow in a 6’X16"X16" block of dirt? Any advice from other rooftop gardeners?
