New member here from TN! Just got on a uni for the first time yesterday and got bit by the bug… A friend let me borrow this older 24" Schwinn with 140 mm cranks and now I gotta have one! I mountain bike regularly on a 29’er but I love the challenge of this unicycle.
Now I’m looking to buy a muni… The 26" nimbus has caught my eye! If anyone has a similar used one in the US that might part ways with it, let me know!
Welcome aboard. And as far as a used unicycle, scroll back through the trading post here. Some of them might still be available and new listings seem to show up regularly. I just bought a real nice used 29" road uni through this board that I’m really happy with.
Welcome from California! Many of us went to TN in 2006 for our Nationals (Memphis).
Your seat is way too low. If the post isn’t already in the top hole, max it out. You can also get longer posts for those old Schwinns, but if you’re saving for your own, just put it toward a brand new one.
Thanks for the advice guys. I didn’t have tools at the time to adjust the seat, and I’m sure it made it much harder. I have since raised it as high as it goes, but still seems a little short for me at 6’0".
Good news is I ordered the 26" Nimbus Muni and it’s scheduled to arrive tomorrow! (Along with some shin/knee guards :))
Got the muni yesterday! I spent about 2 hours with it and had a few rides over 200’. Also was able to ride my gravel drive and into the grass for 30-40’.
One of my long rides I got pretty far from my truck (leaning post) so I tried to free mount it…and after a few tries got it and pedaled away! That got me pretty excited and I managed to get a few more free mounts through the afternoon.
Hi Eastenn, Newbie here myself. Looks like you are making fast progress. I’m interested in your choice of the 26" muni as a learning tool. I am considering it myself. I’m stuck on the 20/24" size for learning since that is what everyone seems to start on. Are you pleased you went with this wheel size and style of unicycle? Thanks so much, Alf
Hey Alf, I don’t have a broad experience with unicycles so my answer may be limited. When making the decision to buy this one I was considering my future goal which is being able to trail ride with it. So far I spent my first 2 hours on the 24" schwinn with street tire and 2 hours with the 26" muni. Since getting the muni I haven’t ridden the schwinn as I want to stick to the muni and learn to ride it.
With that said, the biggest differences I can feel as a newb is that the schwinn is a little less intimidating to be on top of and that it is also easier to initiate a slow speed turn. That’s probably in part due to the smaller diameter wheel, but also the knobbies on the muni really grab hold on the pavement and in grass. On the pavement when turning, you can actually hear the knobbies on the muni dragging.
I am happy with my purchase, and I think once I get more comfortable on the muni that it will pay off. I couldn’t justify spending for 2 unicycles at the time, and I have seen some people suggest buying a street tire with a muni to learn on so that may be another option. Hope this helped some!
Yes, thanks for taking the time to respond. I’m mainly a cyclist but recently passed a guy on the trails on a muni and instantly caught the bug! Stopped and spoke with him a bit.
