Ok, I got my very first unicycle today around noon, Pacific Standard time. I’m doing pretty good, in the first 6 hours I’ve had it, I’ve gone about 30 feet. WOOT!! Well, it didn’t come without a little pain, HAH! Got plenty oh bruises and bumps on my left shin (All from falling off or moving the pedal to far and bumping it with the right foot pedal, ouch!), I have a nasty giant hang nail type thing on my right middle finger (I tried to catch the unicycle when I fell and my hand somehow got cut on something under the seat), and those little nubs that stick out on the side of your feet, my left foot one on the inside would hit the uh… the rod thinger that the pedal is on, and it tore my skin a little and bled, so, I’m gonna go get a blood transfusion or whatever, heh, a joke guys. I’ll post tomorrow on tomorrow’s progress, heheh.
Your doing pretty good for your first day, better than me. At around the same time today I got a new 20" uni–odd coincedince(sp?). Just don’t kill yourself. Please.
And how’d you cut your feet and stuff? Were you barefoot or something? It seems like it would be hard to do that with a shoe. Do you mean 30 feet while holding on to something, 30 feet while mounting against something and riding yourself, or 30 feet by freemounting?
Did you bought the Unicycle second hand or what.
The rod thinger that you talking about is the Crank Arm or the Pedal Crank Arm. By the sound of you in pain that you should check everything on your unicycle before you ride. These are the check points…
Pedals - Check for tightness but not overtighten.
Saddle - Check for loose nuts and sharp objects.
Cranks - Check for tightness at the hub.
Tyre (Tire U.S.) - Check your tyre Pressure using a Tyre pressure gauge. You should be riding on smooth surface for a beginner, not on rough surface until you have got experience riding yet.
Saddle Post - Check for correct height and also check for no sharp objects on it.
Grip Loops on Saddles (DM Unicycles) - Check for tightness underneath and no sharpness around it also.
It pays to look after your unicycle and keep it inside at all times.
Clean it regulary using a dry cloth. And Wear shoes. Others will help you as they will logged on later.
Happy riding.
David.
A similar thing happened to me today when I grabbed under the seat the bolt thread savaged my finger. I decided to use the plastic protector thingies I have from on a different seat. I only have two of them, and I don’t know where to get more. I think the plastic caps are a good idea because if the nuts ever get really loose it might prevent them from falling off and becoming lost, as well as protecting your fingers.
Hmmmm
I was wearing shoes, New Balance Running shoes and they don’t really cover up the little ball things on the sides of my feet. So those little ball things or whatever they are would hit the crank arm. I rode 30 feet by mounting while holding on to a car and riding off into a coldisack. And I’m not going to kill myself… I hope.
Well, I’ll post again later today around 10pm Pacific Standard Time, about how I did today. Oh, but this morning when I went outfront to ride, I rode pretty far, not sure, but it was about 6 car’s length. It was fun until I had to bail into a car, HAHAH! It’s funny, people drive by and they go hella slow to look at me and watch me and stuff. heheheh. This is great!!
Have you got access to a Digital Camera so we can look at your Unicycle and the Saddle And Pedals you mention. That could help us to help you out so we can pin-point the problem. And I agree with Rowan, by putting those plastic caps on the threaded nuts so you won’t have your fingers severed off. I reckon it’s a good idea those plastic caps to put on the nuts to protect your fingers.
And by the sound of you by the way. Keep working on it mate.
That is great stuff. Keep at it, you’ll get there.
David.
Did you see that?!
Yeah, my step dad has a digicam, I could use that. And my finger didn’t get gashed open on any nuts or bolts, you know the little plastic thing on the nose and back of the seat (I’ll point it out in a picture soon) underneath where it goes from hard plastic with two screws to the other hard plastic that holds the soft stuff on, sharp edge pokes up from the hard plastic thing with the two screws. I’m going to sand it down or smooth it off with something. That or I’ll wear gauntlets, HAH! Well, today, I did better than yesterday. I got down how to start from a stand still. And now I can go for about 8 to 9 cars length. tomorrow I hope to learn how to just stay still while on it. And I want to learn how to hop. If anyone could give me some pointers on hopping/jumping, that would be great!! And thanks for all the help and input everyone is giving me! no one else does.
Well, I’ll post tomorrow morning after a good few hours of unicycling and tomorrow nite after a good rest and some more unicycling. I have made unicycling my life!!
Oh-yeah!
By the way, how do you keep from uh… you know… crushing your valuables… I’ve had a hard time with that, I do it sometimes and it hurts like a censored for fellow viewers and yeah… any help or do I have to figure that out on my own. heheh… yeah… awkward moment…
Re: Oh-yeah!
Get some good quality snug fitting skin tight stretchy padded cycling shorts. If you haven’t worn cycling shorts before they work best when worn next to the skin (i.e. no underwear under them).
If you don’t like the spandex look you can wear loose over-shorts on top of the cycling shorts.
Here is a past thread on the topic:

Then there is also the option of trying a suspensory…

If you learn how to hop on your second or third day, I’m going to kill you . It took me much longer just to learn how to free mount!
But when you’re ready for it, just try to push up with your legs, and at the same time lift up on the front handle with your hand. It’s hard at first, but you’ll get the hang of it. I’d suggest working on riding for a little longer before trying to jump, if for nothing else than to save my failing ego.
As for the eunuch-cycle thing, you’ll figure it out in the long run. Not very comforting as you’re lying down on the ground, doubled over in pain, but you’ll figure out how to sit correctly after a while. It’s the suicide mount that still scares me.
Good luck, and keep posting!
Re: Re: Oh-yeah!
Note: that still holds if you have worn cycling shorts before
Klaas Bil
Hey paco, jumping was a lot easier for me… I did t about 3 inches on my first try. Maybe it was because I had a pogo stick.

Heh, I messed up on the quoting thing so I did that.
Anyway, just staying in one place is hard unless you’re hopping (like staying sill on a pogo stick) or idling (going forward then back then forward then back etc). If you mean idling or hopping, then yeah, that’s a good idea… idling is probably a little advanced for you right now, but you’re learning quickly, so I guess you can start trying. Have you looked at unicycling.org? They have the official unicycling skill levels… it didn’t just tell me where I was in unicycling, but it also told me a lot of tricks that I didn’t know of, which would help me advance in levels. It might help you too… sorry about any typos, I’m on a laptop and I’m not used to typign on all the little flat keys and stuff.
I just wear boxers.
And sing in the boys choir after trying a suicide mount.
hmph
Right now I’m just wearin’ boxers, I get on fine most the time but I have to adjust and fix my pants and blah blah, but when I do get on sometimes and I land on my ya ya’s and I go about three feet or so, I cry… sniff But I get back on and I take it like a man… that’s after I’m done resting for about 20 minutes or so…
Pff… gffpff… pfff… PAHAAAHAAHAHAHAHAAHA that was funny…
Re: hmph
Girls wear boxers?!?
agree
"If you learn how to hop on your second or third day, I’m going to kill you . It took me much longer just to learn how to free mount! "
i’m trying 2 learn 2 bunny hop its pretty hard but i know now i need 2 flatten my tyre more! got free mounting now which i’m very proud of
i find it easir 2 free mount now i have a new think chunky tyre there is probably some comlicated scientific explation for this, but does anyone else find this?
Re: Re: hmph
HAHAHAHAH!!! You make me laugh… ok, so yeah. I’m not a girl… I don’t know how you got that idea, but I’m a dude. So, yeah, that clears that up.
