We had a visit from the police this evening. For those not in the area, we’re having one grand ol’ blizzard tonight! Someone had seen Baxter out in the backyard and called the police on us saying that we must be neglecting our pets. I told the policeman that Baxter loves it in the backyard (he really does) and that he also had a huge fully insulated doghouse for shelter. The policeman told us that since he has shelter there’s no problem, he laughed it off, looked at my I.D., and then told us to have a great night and left.
Part of me wants to tell whoever to mind their own business, but the more sensible part is thankful that they are looking out for Baxter. Our backyard backs up to the parking lot of a nursing home and we’re 99% sure it was a nursing home employee that called. They all love Bax. On their way to and from work, they always stop to see Big Bax and give him doggie treats. Some even share their lunch leftovers with him. So tonight, they only had his best interest in mind…right?
My dad was getting are barbecue ready in the backyard, and waiting for the coals to get ready, and the next thing I know, I hear sirens, I look out the windows and see three fire trucks right in front of my house, and then im talking to a fireman at my door.
I guess someone though the little smoke from the barbecue was a fire and called it in.
It was kinda funny.
Im glad I have neighbors who care enough to look out for things at my house, even if they get it wrong most times.
Well not for me. I had fire fighters come to our house because “there was smoke coming from the chimney”. Our neighbor also threatened to kill our dog with a chain saw if it went into property (no fence at that time).
As you can imagine, she is a total bitc… “Female dog”, and is quite insane.
I feel sorry for the kids that she teaches.
What if one day you’ll be coming home late, the door will be locked and you won’t have your keys with you, so you’ll decide to climb through the window not to wake anyone. Your watchful neighbours will spot you and shoot you in the back. You will fall on the ground and bleed to death before the ambulance arrives.
Actually my friends once saw someone climbing in their neighbors window late at night, so they called the cops, and the cops came and got everyone scared but it was just the neighbor’s son…
Some people call the police about all kinds of little things. Sometimes it’s just your turn to be the target. I know you have more sense than to take it out on the policeman, but unfortunately not everyone has.
Being called out on a false alarm in a blizzard can’t be to best part of the job.
It’s stuff like this that makes me glad I live in the middle of nowhere. I think they should have brought the issue up with you first, I guessed they were worried you would be angry at their presumption
Of course If you really want to get your own back, next time they’re sharing their lunch scraps with baxter, phone the police and say you think someone is trying to poison your dog
Yeah, I would have loved a phone call or something first, but I can see where someone would either be worried about my reaction or wanted to remain anonymous. I’m fairly well known around town and as a former City employee, the police department knows my family’s character. The officer was very nice about it all. He even had a trainee along with him that was a former soccer player of mine. And it was a pretty nasty night to be out and about. Even though he was on-duty that night, I think it irked him a bit to have to deal with something this silly in that weather.
Here’ my Taj Mahal of doghouses. Sorry about the winter mud and muddy paw prints. We’ll get it cleaned up in the spring. Bax’ house has the same look and feel of our home even down to the roof pitch and shingle color. It even has glass panes in the windows. I wish I could find miniture gutters and downspouts to install on it.
Actually, I got first dibs. I’m married, you know, so I need a place to hang out sometimes.
I built it big enough for two dogs since we have two. But Abby is getting old now and prefers to stay mostly in the peoplehouse. I was going to build partitions inside to make two rooms. Also, since I don’t fit through the little doorway, the whole roof is hinged on one side so I can get inside and clean from time to time.
You are the most awesome doggie daddy. I can see that you spared no expense. There aren’t too many dog houses that have central air conditioning. He’s a lucky dog.
You just made my day with that. Actually my dogs have central heating and air, but thats only because they lie in the house. Jack Russel Terriers, both smooth haired.
It’s a tricky one.
A phone call from the concerned neighbour along the lines of ‘do you know your dog is outside?’ would have made more sense to me.
Calling the cops is pretty intense.
Especially for a huge furry thick-coated dog who was romping around the back yard biting at snowflakes during the worst part of the blizzard.
Bax is now 1½ years old but still has the mind of a puppy. He’s about 100 lbs. though so when he gets to romping around the living room, things hit the floor.
