The question is, would you have known that you were selling it to google
when an offer was made? If it appeared to be just a random person asking
to buy it, what would it have gone for? Obvoiusly less than if you knew
it was google making the offer.

Unlike the past things they have done on this special day, this one is
actually possible and not a bad idea for them (if done right). Today, a
GB of storage can be bought for less than $1, and the chances of each
user actually using all of that is very unlikely. Besides, they could
easily make money on the ads that match the content of the email.

Re: google to offer free email

Are you sure it’s not real? I mean, it is possible like Gilby mentioned.
Plus, another way to kick Microsoft’s butt

Re: google to offer free email

This paragraph is what really throws the whole thing off for me and
being more like an April Fools joke:
Added Page, “Gmail solves all of my communication needs. It’s fast and
easy and has all the storage I need. And I can use it from anywhere. I
love it!”

It just seems like a statement that a customer would make, not what a
Google founder would say. It’s just too much hype.

Re: google to offer free email

there’s also this quote from a google employee on the WMW forums

"Google’s mission: to organize the world’s information, making it
universally accessible and useful. Email == information. "

and then this:

"So what did people decide? Is it for real or an April Fool’s Day joke? "

I forget what the double equals signs means programming wise?

Now I’m confused

That’s what this related story says they will do:

A single equal sign sets the variable. A double equal sign evaluates the
statement.

In any case, if I were to bet on if this is real vs. an April Fools
joke, I’d bet that it’s real. It makes good business sense for them to
do it.

Re: google to offer free email

I am now almost 100% sure it;'s real. The site has changed and now provides
quite a bit more concrete info on the service!

As soon as it’s fully launched, I am ditching Hotmail.

Re: google to offer free email

You nailed it:
No pop-up ads. No banners.
You see only relevant text ads and links to related web pages of interest.

Re: google to offer free email

A fascinating read on Google’s 100,000 servers, why they always work, how
they’re creating the world’s largest Web-scale platform, and why they can
afford to keep GMail free.
