Google street view, good or bad?

What are your views on google street view? Do you beleve that it is a serious breach of privicy?

It’s only in a few cities now. I think having the plan old satellite views is giving less privacy then the actual street view.

Isn’t this coming from someone who lives in a country where it’s damn near impossible to be outside of a camera range?

Seriously though, I don’t think it’s that bad. If someone were just standing somewhere on a street watching people it wouldn’t be a breach of privacy…it would be creepy, yes, but not an invasion of privacy.

it’s kind of weird. how recent are the pictures on street view?

Last time I checked they blurred the faces of people on the street and did the same to licence plates on cars.

the pics from my brothers street in NYC are at least 2 years old. We looked but didint find him on his walk to the subway.

Yes, but that film is not available to any member of the genreal public with a computer, most of it is never viewed by human eyes unless an incident is reported. Quite a different deal.

And this is good…how?

Oh, I get it. The whole “if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about” kind of thing.

No, you are drawing a parallel between a system which allows anyone to see what you’re up to, and a sytem which allows select members of the authorities to see what you are up to. In terms of violation of privacy those are two very different things. I’m fine with my doctor seeing me naked, but I’d rather it wasn’t on the internet.

I had a look at it today and nothing is blured were I looked.
One of the thing I found quite funny/ diturbing is people with there faces clearly vissible walking in/ out of sex shops and strip clubs.

you just have to know were the cameras are

i’m not too sure what to think of all the cameras in the uk, but its completely ridiculous to compare both systems.

I actually think that i dont care. If i get caught on the google map thing then i’m not gonna look and i cant be bothered to check. I think its pointless and people have too much time to waste and will look at these cameras.

As for UK cameras i actually think it could be good. I mean if you look at how quickly they caught those people that

How is that better? To be cliche and reference an over-referenced book, only a select few knew what was going in Orwell’s 1984. That system doesn’t seem much better to me.

that…

Aren’t they public streets?

If I zoom in on my house on the regular Google Maps, it shows a Stanley Steemer truck in my driveway. Because of that I know the exact day that image was taken!

And everyone who wants to look will see that I’ve been a customer of Sanley Steemer (carpet cleaning). Scandalous! But for someone else, this could have been the car of a mistress in the driveway. Which returns me to my original question, aren’t they public streets? Yes, the driveway isn’t public but mine is short and straight; clearly visible from the street.

It’s a public place. If you don’t want people seeing you naked on the internet don’t go out in public naked. Same goes for other activities you do in public.

The pictures are pretty old also. If you drive by Grauman’s Chinese theater in Hollywood they’re playing “The New World” Darth Vader and a Storm Trooper are hanging out there as well.

At least the world knows you have clean carpets.

Oh when was it taken?

No, it was actually taken the day after they came, when the truck had already left.
