Well I was inspired by that video of the blind bike trials rider Miles posted in RSU and have decided to go blind for the next week starting tomorrow morning. I will be putting out daily videos at the beginning and end of each day for the next week documenting my experiences. Here’s the first of them just talking about what I plan to do.
Enjoy! I hope you follow my journey and are inspired to try something similar.
I’m subscribing to your channel. This is gonna be entertaining! I may try something similar for 1-3 days. I have already tried unicycling blinfolded. It’s not as hard as it may seem.
the unicycling isn’t the part that’s going to be hard it’s going to be the fact that I’m going to be super used to doing everything with sight and I’ll have to ask for a lot of help with school work and stuff.
EDIT: Uploading Videos may become a problem as well haha I didn’t think about that until now. I’ll just have family help me upload and record I guess.
I officially go blind tomorrow morning, and I’ll be having friends help me by reading it to me and I’ll just type it all up or just do it verbally by talking the assignment over with the teacher.
gah, just talked to my boss. I can’t be blind at work and I need the money so i can’t take the week off which means I wont be blind for the entire time. (about 5 or so hours a day I’ll be able to see) I’ll still do everything else blind I just need the money and stuff. I’ll re-attempt being fully blind on a day when I am able to take a few days off work.
That sucks. I think that ruins much of the fun and excitement in it. Normally, I would think that it would be fun at the end of the week when you see light again. Where do you work?
I work at Serious Juggling. I’d feel really bad backing out of the whole experiment now since I’ve already told so many people about it(including all my teachers haha) and made a video, so I’m going to do a partial blindness week instead haha I’ll be blind at all times except work. It should still be pretty interesting to do and I’ll do it again sometime for sure with full on blindness. I need the money though so I haven’t got many options.
I’m very much looking forward to your posts and videos. Good luck. Don’t worry that the experiment isn’t perfect. I think it will still be extremely challenging (and a bit scary). It will be quite an accomplishment even if you can’t do it while at work, especially if you don’t ever cheat. For example, you could be outside alone and lose your bearings. Lost and without sight, what will you do?
I hear that JAWS is the best screen reading software. They have a demo version. It would be great if you included experience with a screen reader because most software and web sites are not Section 508 compliant, which makes them more difficult to use with a screen reader. It would be interesting to hear about your frustrations and successes accessing, say, these fora (and other sites and software that you normally use).
Be careful crossing the street. Most people who suddenly go blind don’t just go about their daily lives the very next day. They have to learn how to function without sight. You lack that training. Also, I hope you have a support network. You will be out in the real world, sometimes far from home. Even in the home, there are hazards like stairs and furniture to walk into*. Stay safe. Best of luck! And tell us all about your experiences…
it will be most difficult when things go wrong. You could break a toe walking into furniture (keep you shoes on). You could be home alone with everything going fine. You are in the kitchen getting a bite to eat and drink, then you knock a glass off the counter. Now you have to clean up broken glass without being able to see. Don’t step on it! LOL, I guess my advice boils down to keep your shoes on.
Well after day one I almost broke my toes, and school became way too hard. So I’m going to put the experiment on hold until I can be better prepared. I will try it again sometime because it was very ‘eye-opening’ as to how difficult it is to do things I can normally do without any trouble for someone who can’t see. Until I can be sure I wont actually break my toes on the next attempt at blindness for a week this experiment is ended.
