Apparently the police in Nigeria are superstitious enough to believe that a man running away from the scene of an attempted robbery could turn himself into a goat.
It is amazing that in our 21st century world, such beliefs would be held by the authorities in a country. I know that other countries are not all developed like the West; I lived in a third-world country for 8 years where superstition was prevalent. But these guys really believed this stuff, because otherwise they would not have arrested a goat.
haha, first thing I though when I read the thread title was that Jackie (Goats_On_Unicycles) was the one detained! But then I can’t imagine he would/could commit robbery!
I’m… I’m speechless. I mean, what the hell are you talking about?
Other countries are not all developed like the west? You lived in a ‘third-world’ country where superstition was prevalent?
I mean, do you really believe that just because you live in USA that aren’t superstitious people there?!
I think you’re trying not to be prejudice, but, they way you said just seems that all the third-world countries believe in ‘superstitious’ things… which is not right!
And, ok this case is really weird! This guy that turned into a goat thing but, you can’t judge other people! If they believe in that, the only thing you can say it’s “Oh, that’s sad” but don’t say that they are not ‘developed’ enough! I could say that christians are stupid because they believe in a thing that I’ve never seen! God? I’ve never seen him in my whole life! And, guess what, almost 80% of the americans are christians! So, thinking that way, I could say that, although USA is a developed country, they have some ‘third-world country’ beliefs!
UFOs (fuels books, TV shows, products you can buy, etc.)
Horoscopes (show me a newspaper that doesn’t have one in the back. I would equate these newspapers with those cops in Nigeria)
Fortune telling:
Predictions for 2009
Vague predictions from people long dead
Psychic readings (even with “real” psychics!)
Horoscopes also fit here, but earn their own major category above
Palm reading
Voodoo (less people)
Supernatural beings who are all-powerful
There are plenty of people in Nigeria who believe in nothing more than the almighty dollar (or other form of money). They still send me emails nearly every day…
The people of the US think that(WARNING: Blanket Statement) we are a country that is developed and sophisticated and beyond childish beliefs. Admittedly, there are many who have superstitions, especially if you go out in the sticks perhaps. I just don’t really see any in my circles. Maybe my circles are too small.
I know that third-world countries are sensitive to being called such and that maybe they should be referred to as “developing” countries. I remember someone on Oprah talked about their experience in Guyana years ago. The picture they painted of Guyana was not sunshine and roses, to put it lightly. And people took offense. In reality, Guyana was not a pleasant place to live in 30 years ago(and still it’s not that great!:o)
I don’t know where you get your stats from, but 80% of Americans are not Christians. Maybe they are Christians because they are not a Muslim or an atheist. And yes, some Americans hold Third-World beliefs, but they are not manifested so radically as the beliefs of the Nigeria police.
Should I try to “defend” God against this attack by Rezzy? I’ll leave that up to others to decide. There are enough religious threads and this has the potential become another, which is fine. I’ll just say that you don’t see spirits, so you can’t see God. Metaphysically, it is possible for such an event to happen: I’ve heard of a donkey talking and a staff turning into a snake. I don’t think that you or I could just turn ourselves into an animal in such a manner though.
(Before anyone corrects me, it was vigilantes who brought the goat to the police; they police did not do it independently.)
I’m pretty sure the New York Times has a horoscope in it, every single day. Not exactly the sticks. You are surrounded by superstitious people, though you may not know it. It might even be safe to say that almost everybody practices some sort of superstitious behavior, though much of it is very minor.
Okay, I think you just offended a bunch of people again. What are third-world beliefs?
Do you think God needs defending? Put yourself in the superstitious category then. I didn’t even think of it as an attack.
I’ve heard of lots of nutty stuff too. Question is, do you believe it?
Yes, most of the world believes in a God (or gods) of some sort. That doesn’t mean they aren’t superstitious.
Wait a minute! Maybe there really is such a thing as a man turned into a goat!
You can bet this will be sure-fore “fodder” for Leno, Letterman and the rest! Stray Tuned! And while you’re at it, enjoy a nice warm glass of…Goat’s milk! It’s a fine beverage!
I think it doesn’t matter what size your circle is. If you are looking within it, everything looks fine. If you are looking outside of it, things start looking a little weird. This is the point at which people begin to make judgments like you are now. When their gaze goes just beyond the boundary of their circle.
I will comment only on the first item. By definition, all UFOs are real. They are not a superstition they are quite simply unidentified flying objects.
I didn’t attack God or anything like that. I was just saying that you saying that being superstitious is a third-world country belief is ridiculous and offensive! I’m just trying to show my point of view. I don’t believe in God, but I respect people who believe in him! I never said you are not ‘developed’ enough because you believe in God… and that was exactly what YOU did when you said that people in third-world countries have stupid beliefs! I’m not saying that I believe that someone can turn into a goat but, I’m always respectful with other beliefs! I would probably just laugh but NEVER call them underdeveloped.
I stand corrected, partially. I’ve seen plenty of UFO accounts, on TV, that were clearly lens or image sensor dirt. Any photographer could have pointed this out, and surely did, but if you include all sides of the story you don’t make any money in the UFO business.
But beyond that, any UFOs that are actually flying are real. And people are plenty superstitious about them…
There are nutjobs on every continent, in every country and city throughout the world; and, this just in…the largest concentration is right here, jc! Yeah!
Easy Rezinha, this is a forum where communication is taking place by text. We have no face to face interaction so there is bound to be confusion. My apologies if I misrepresented your views; I was probably reading into them too much. And my sentence about “defend” and “attack” was probably overkill. Let’s just say for now that people don’t turn themselves into goats. Can we agree on that?
