GMRS and FSR radio's

anyone got a review here of these two?

im looking to get some personal radios but from what ive read the high price of the GMRS’s dont reflect much differance. they both review as “line of site”

i already have a Ham licence so dont bring that up for the GMRS’s

i dont know about MURS.

basicly, i want a pair of radios, do you have expierance with any?

Re: GMRS and FSR radio’s

Jagur,

We have three Motorola FRS Walkabouts that we use very often. They are the older ones with the 2-mile range and not the newer 5-mile range but they’re still great! We use them while camping so the boys can talk to us while down at the lake fishing, Brad takes one on his paper route to talk to ‘homebase’, the boys will take them while out in the neighborhood, we use them at soccer tourneys, in Wal-Mart, during fall deer hunting, just about everywhere. We’ve even used them in place of CB’s while traveling with other vehicles.

Clarity is great, the multitude of sub-channels is even better. Only thing is we don’t let the boys and friends use them as toys or walkie-talkies. We bought them for $70 each, I imagine they’re much cheaper now.

thanx yooper,

anyone else got any reviews? im hoping to buy some soon and the market is flooded. i dont want to buy some crappy ones.

OK, as far as I know the major difference between gmrs and frs, is frs only allows up to 0.5 watts of power, whereas gmrs allows up to aroun 4-6 watts (don’t remember exactly), which should allow you to go up to around three times as far. You mentioned them both being line-of-site, but what did you expect them to be, at that frequency?

Anyway, as far as brands, I have never actually bought any frs radios (a few ham radios, but no frs) motorola is probably a good brand, but personally I would go with a brand that makes a lot of commercial and/or amateur radio gear, such as kenwood, icom, or vertex standard (but I don’t think they make frs/gmrs radios) I think kenwood has about the best selection, and from my (limited) experience with their frs radios, they seem pretty good.

thanx, the Kenwood line is big. there are so many radios in this market!

i hope to find some with good quailty recevers.
