My daughter was trying to set up her gmail to come into Outllook. I did mine at home and at work with no problems and I can’t see why hers doesn’t work. Here is a description of her problem she wrote:
"I am unable to send messages from Outlook 2002. I’ve spoken with
my ISP who tells me my settings are correct. My settings are the same
as those on the set up Gmail for Outlook 2002. They include:
Incoming mail server (POP3) pop.gmail.com Server port 995
Outgoing mail server (SMTP) smtp.gmail.com Server port 465
The error message is as follows: Task ‘pop.gmail.com - Sending and
Receiving’ reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The operation timed out
waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue
to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet
service provider (ISP).
I’ve tried clearing the SSL in Internet Explorer and restarting Outlook
but I still get the error message. I can not send a test page either.
I have 2 MSN accounts which download into Outlook and work if I use
them as a default account. I’ve also enabled on the Gmail side.
Lame idea, but consider Thunderbird (or similar non-Microsoft product)?
Outlook, which I used for years (still use Entourage), is great once you get everything set up and working. But try to get your data out of that program and you’re going to have an interesting challenge! It took me two weeks to figure out how to get all my accumulated old email archives, addresses and calendar data over to (microsoft) Entourage when I switched to the Mac. No process for exporting from Microsoft to Microsoft? At least now that it’s on the Mac version, the stuff can be exported into industry-standard formats.
Sorry I don’t have any more useful info about gmail…
Email should not be OS-dependent. It must be some sort of setting, but I can’t offer any good suggestions of what. Using it as an excuse to upgrade MS Office? $269.99 (from Amazon)
I too was going to suggest Thunderbird, since V2 has pre-built suppoer for Gmail. I still find it easier to use gmail itself instead of Thunderbird though.
I use a gmail account at my work. I have it coming into Outlook. I have never looked a my gmail account since setup. I like the folder orginzation in outlook and it’s also where I keep all my contacts so it’s very useful. I have a second monitor for use mostly with Outlook.
