Have any of you seen this? I installed it yesterday and it seems to work quite well. It allows you to use the gig that gmail gives you as a network drive.
Basically, it stores your files as emails.
Check it out.

Sounds really handy for sharing files between your computer and another (eg. university work, etc). The maximum file size would still be 10MB though wouldn’t it? Gmail’s really pushing forward in the innovation department! I’m glad they’ve now got the contact list up and running properly. Thanks for the link.
I love Gmail!

Mmm… iPod can hold work files and such. Oh the 15gb size files I could take to school, if I had any. And Malcolm (some dickhead at our school) could transfer his 60gb of porn in 3 or 4 trips, if he bought a 20gb iPod.
Re: gmail drive
You watch The Screensavers alot huh? Everyday they show something new you always do a nice follow up. Thanks once again!
Re: Re: gmail drive
Actually, I have no idea what that is. A friend told me about this. The only problem I’ve had so far is that it screws with gmail notifier. I use one account for mail and the other for files, but every time I use gmail drive, notifier comes up and says that I have messages that can’t be read and that it can’t log in. It’s a little annoying, but not to the point where I will stop using either. By the way, google didn’t make the gmail drive program. It’s an open source program that a third party made. I just hope google doesn’t find it and shut it down.

Re: Re: Re: gmail drive
Not having used gmail I can’t really comment about its usefulness, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the ability to use this doesn’t last long.
If the 1GB idea works by assuming that either (a) people won’t use that much space or (b) by the time they do storage will be cheap enough so it won’t matter, making it possible to fill it up faster with other things might cause problems.
This started out as a linux module; so few people would use that so it wouldn’t be a problem, but now it’s so easy to use on Windows it might be something Google aren’t willing to tolerate.

Just a word of caution, “Big Brother” I guess that’s tow words. I am a bit of a computer geek, heavy on the geek part and just be careful not to open yourself up to a hack or something worse.
Keep in mind that carelessness keeps computer guys in business.
Re: Re: Re: Re: gmail drive
Gmail is only by invite so I think they have that under control, if it gets that they can grow any more then no more invites.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: gmail drive
It’s by invite only now because it’s in beta testing. They plan to open it to everyone in the future.
Re: Re: Re: gmail drive
Go back and read the site and it tells you how to avoid the notifier problems. If you don’t feel like going back to read it I’ll summarize it here for you:
Set up a filter that archives the files as soon as they are recieved. The filter should archive messages that have “GMAILFS” in the subject.
Re: Re: Re: Re: gmail drive
I did that. The problem is that I have two gmail accounts. One is used for mail, this is the one that notifier is setup with. The other is just for files, which are the one that gmail drive is using. I think the problem is that you can only be logged into one at a time. And when I log into my gmail drive, it’s blocking notifier from logging in.
just found this
kewl toy
i’ve downloaded and installed it and everything seems fine but everytime i try n drag a file to the G-Drive, i get an error message telling me that i’ve entered an ‘unknown username or bad password’
which i’m not
thoughts?
hope i’m still in time to edit this
it was a proxy issue and i got it squared away
thanx anyway
That looks like a really cool idea. Too bad I don’t have any old mail to try it with.
Re: Another Gmail Toy
It would have been very handy back before I decided to manually forward each of those important emails.

Re: Re: Another Gmail Toy
Same here…
do i smell a pending lawsuit?
looks like they already put a stop to it, check out the register part of the site… (Link)
That’s got to suck. The usegmail service started 6 years ago. Then again, maybe they got a nice chunk of change for google to buy them out.
