Giraffes, and Heelys

Do any giraffe owners get so good, and comfortable on their giraffes that they can ride them as much as other unicycles? Also, does anybody ever actually ride places with them, or do they just use them for fun? I just ride my 5’ giraffe for fun, but I have only ridden on it two days, because of bad weather. I can’t freemount it yet, so it would be hard to ride anywhere.

Also, are there any unicyclists who have heelys? Heelys Website I think it is a pretty cool effect when I hop of my unicycle (not my giraffe), and immediately start skating.

If you can ride a standard unicycle, a giraffe is not any harder, just a
little different. I can ride my giraffe as far as I want. I don’t, though,
because gliding is many times easier when you can actually reach the
wheel. I think 5 miles is the farthest I went at a time, but was never
modivated to try for greater distances.

As for freemounting, it doesn’t take long to get reasonable at (I’m
certainly not a master). I first learned how to mount by holding onto a
fence. When I got that down, I mounted by brick walls (nothing to grip on
the wall, so takes a little more balance), and finally no wall at all.

There are a few guys from the Bronx who occasionally join our NYC club who
only ride giraffes. They ride long distances and are very good. Funny
thing was - one of them had a hard time riding my regular 24!" Apparently
they are waiting for delivery on a few custom built titanium giraffes.

In 1980, Bradley Bradley and I rode in a March of Dimes SuperRide event
on our geared-up Schwinn Giraffes. This was a 75km charity ride. Our
unicycles were geared up just under 2:1. Even still, we were the first
to start and the last to finish. I had been riding less than a year at
that point.

Never again. Can you say major crotch pain? We did the ride again, but
with big wheels.
