Yes, finally, after making it a goal 13 years ago, I have mounted my
giraffe uni in the open (I had done it before with a stop, but that
doesn’t count). This is probably something that I’ll be able to do only
1 in 10 or 20 or 50 tries now, but if I stick with it, I’m confident
that I’ll develop more consistency. In the meantime, John Foss’ record
of 135 (or a similar number of) consecutive giraffe free mounts is safe.
This is probably a trite question, but does a giraffe free mount count
as a separate type of mount in the IUF/USA skill levels? I’m not strong
on mounts, and any advantage I could attain here might allow me to
advance beyond levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 (if I ever test). Thanks for taking
this question into consideration.

I would allow it, as long as the crank arms are not immediately above the tire.
Especially if you did the rest of the subsequent level on said giraffe!

Congradulations on learning to freemount a giraffe. At TCUC when we test for
levels all the skills have to be done on the same unicycle so you wouldn’t be
able to use a giraffe for your mounts.

Unless of course you sit the entire level on a giraffe <grin>. I think it would
be possible to pass level 1,2,3 and 4 on a giraffe. Any one think 5 is possible?
Wheel walking would be darn difficult.

I read through the Skill Level front matter on the IUF Web site
(http://www.unicycling.org/iuf/levels/). There is no mention of limitations of
the type of unicycle to be used.
Remember when we talk about the Standard Skill competition event and the Skill
Levels, each is a separate entity though they borrow from each other. For
Standard Skill competition, a “standard”, direct drive unicycle must be used.

Congrats Carl!!
I got my 6 footer a year ago, and I still can’t mount the damn thing. It’s
just too scary! I hope I hope I hope I hope I’m in your shoes in a year or
two. Way to go!

I am not taking a position, just pointing out that the question here is whether
we start accepting skills in unicycles that are not standard.

Like I said, I have no position against it. In PR we have never yaken advantage
of the Skill levels as much as other places. I just wanted to point out the
precedent, so that we all know what we are doing.
We may have to include ultimates, BC, Two-eheelers, three wheelers, and some
other non-standard uni in the future.

Judging from the subject headers "Giraffe Mount: I did it!), we missed a posting
on this subject last week when we’d temporarily unsubscribed while away over
Thanksgiving. Does anyone have a back copy archived that they could send us?
We’re still trying to get this Giraffe Mounting to work.
