giraffe cranks sizes

What crank sizes do people have on their giraffes? 125mm? (5") 150mm? (6")
Anybody tried different crank sizes on giraffes for different handling?

The classic Schwinn Giraffe came with 5.5" one-piece cranks (140mm).
Having ridden this size since my earliest days of unicycling, it has
always seemed like a good balance between leverage and speed.

JeanPaul Jenack’s old giraffe, hand built in the 1940’s or so and built
for professional use, had very long cranks at 6.5" or longer. This
provided much more exaggerated foot movement, making actions like rocking
very visual. I think the old timers’ and handmade giraffes would tend
toward longer cranks.

Bernie Crandall’s giraffes, built to last a lifetime at the cost of $10 a
foot, also had long cranks, which were bicycle leftovers. On a tall
giraffe I would rather have leverage than speed.

“This rock is hard.” – Brett Bymaster (who rode every inch of the
“hard” stuff)

Beau’s 4’ giraffe w/20" wheel geared up to 27" effective size has 110mm (4
1/2") cranks. Seems a little short maybe, but he likes it and when I’ve
ridden it it feels fine. Idling, 1-foot etc no problem.

Older DM Giraffes like mine had 5.5 inch cranks with the upper sprockets
having one tooth more than the lower sprockets - new ones have 5 inch
cranks with one tooth less on the upper sprockets.

N.B. You don’t have to bother rotating the tyre due to wear !
