gigapixels

this is pretty amazing. i wonder if way in the future the standard for cameras will be gigapixels.

“This final photo is made up of 220 Canon G10 images and the file is 59,783 X 24,658 pixels or 1,474 megapixels. It took more than six and a half hours for the Gigapan software to put together all of the images on my Macbook Pro and the completed TIF file is almost 2 gigabytes. Photo by David Bergman!”

I love the zoomability of those things. And the Canon G10 was an interesting choice to use. That camera has so many pixels (14.7 MP) that the G11 has less! Unprecedented! I want a G11. Less pixels on the same size image sensor gives a better quality picture…

My God, how could that blonde girl be topless in front of so many people?

Took me almost a minute to realise your evil plot, Naomi.

and in the 1/4000 of a second, or whatever it is that that picture was taken… and Barack Obama blinks. typical of some one to ruin a fantastic picture.

That blonde girl was identified just over a year ago.

The Epic of GigaPan?

Guess I’m going to be busy this weekend. I WILL find her;)

They have a space telescope up right now that has a resolution of 95 megapixels. Imagine the amount of data it is transmitting, especially beacause its probably in a raw. format.
And a lot of space pictures are multiple layers of the same thing, to increase brightness or to accent different attributes, and at full resolution most of those take up a lot of memory and take a lot to compute.

yeah they usually take loads of pictures through different filters of, then collate them all and increase contrast, remove noise etc or add colour in the case of the hubble telescope which only has a black and white camera. most of the pictures of space look nothing like they should, but they’re like that so they are easier to analyse and work from.

that picture is pretty cool, could have been of something slightly more interesting though lol. Or if there was some one in there dressed as wally… now that would be cool!

They who?
But yes, huge image files. However, the ratio of megapixels to quality is dependent on the size of the image sensor. What’s in that telescope is probably a lot bigger than a full-frame 35mm sensor, let alone one of the tiny ones found in a Canon G10 or other compact camera.

haha well, there’s 20 pages of gigapixel pics to look at :). i’ve probably spent too much time exploring these pics, but oh well lol.

Searching for “unicycle” on gigapan had a couple of good results.

haha wow i can’t believe it.

alright…

I like that you can see snipers on tops of the buildings in the background.

awesome find

There are 10 easter eggs to find… No kidding (each one has a number beside)
