I currently have a standard viscount seat and was thinking about upgrading. I was just wondering why everyone seems to go with air seat conversions vr. a gel seat conversion??
Also any tips on fixing the problem of killing your fingers on the Viscount Bumpers while hopping? I tend to mess up my fingers fairly well on the inside part of the bumpers where they are screwed on to the frame.
Gel is comfy. But it’s also heavy, expensive, and can be hard to get.
I made a gel Viscount conversion. I went with gel instead of an air seat because gel will never get a flat in the middle of a ride. Repairing a flat in a Viscount air seat would also involve tearing the whole seat apart again which would be a royal pain.
I used the gel Viscount for a short while and then switched over to Miyata and carbon fiber air seats.
Duct tape works wonders for fixing up the area under the bumper that messes up your fingers.

I don’t have one, but what about mounting a reeder handle?
work the maze.

In the early days of air seats, several people were experimenting with
combinations of air, foam, and/or gel. Even George Peck had one. I think the
main drawbacks of gel are that it’s expensive, doesn’t come in the right
shapes, and most of all, it’s heavy.
People seemed to figure out that the air seats worked fine and were all they
needed. A simple innertube in place of your foam will work fine. Or, you can
get fancier and put it in an air pillow, or do any number of additional
steps to make it more sturdy or controllable. So far for me, I’ve been fine
with just an innertube in there.

One word: Miyata
Soon I think it will be two words: Miyata and Velo!

RE: Gel Seats
I converted my Viscount seat to a gel-seat a few months ago… Let’s just say
it doesn’t make that much of a difference… after less than 30 minutes of
riding, my nether regions are in so much pain, I immediately drop my uni and
prance around like my pants are on fire. I highly suggest a Miyata
Air-saddle… I just recently ordered a Red Miyata Seat, with a air-pillow and
a Black Roach cover…
