The Swiss company Schlumpf will be mass producing a geared unicycle
hub in the spring of 2005.

Does anyone know when Greg Harper will be mass producing his geared
unicycle hub?

Most impressive. It would be nice to see how the pricing turns out.
an aluminum Yuni frame…hmmm?
I wonder if the hub can be ripped out and stashed in my KH24…
I wonder if that hub handles MUni stresses?
This is awesome! I’ve been checking the site the whole summer and even checked it a couple days ago. I’m hoping to buy one if they are cheap enough.
What do you guys think of that on the fly shifting? I think it’s a good idea.
I think when they add a hand-shiftable system it will be fantastic. Shifting with the heels as they’ve currently got it set would be very tricky. A friend of mine (who gave them the idea for this unicycle application of their hub and cranks) has emailed them suggesting they make them available with the flanges more widely spaced. At the moment they’re very narrow things which would not go down well on larger wheels.

Scratch that, it would appear what you can now see on the site is the result of that email.

Looks like they used the same scalloped hub flange shape that Steve Howard used for his KH like hub. I’ve always wanted a hub that looked like a flower :D.
Really, I can’t wait for these to come out. I don’t think I’d be getting one (at least for a while) but it’s always cool to see new innovations in a field I am interested in.
Hmmm… very well… interesting. I am not quite sure about the heel shifting thing. I recently was reading up about the self shifting bike gers that change when a certain amout of pressure is applied from going uphill or downhill. I thought that was veryclever. I am not sure if this is basically the same Idea, if it is I knew it would happen if it isn’t then awesome.
Expert Geared Hub OPinions
I wonder what Steve Howard or Harper’s expert opinion is of these hubs since they have built them. Any thoughts?
I’ve always considered shift-on-the-fly to be dicey but have never tried it. Even without, getting off and shifting would be much easier than my approach to it.
I have found overseas production to be practically impossible so far and am looking into domestic hub manufacture now. That would jack the price alot. Schlumph offers an entire unicycle and it will be interesting to find out how many Euros it takes to buy one. I would also like to know the backlash of his gear-shifting system as measured at the end of a 150mm crank.
A 20" wheel would be a novelty item. Wheels larger than 24" become interesting at 1.5 overdrive.
