And I thought that a 6’ Giraffe was the only way to get high!

Late last summer I was riding my 24" standard Miyata newly outfitted with 26"
rim, low profile tire and 4" cranks around Lake of the Isles and Lake Calhoun in
Minneapolis when I was flagged down by a very colorfully dressed man burdened
down with what must have literally have been pounds of gold jewelery. I must
sheepishly admit I reflexively thought, “…ostentatious drug dealer? …out of
the closet gay?”.
In heavily accented English that quickly identified him as Carribean, he
enquired if he might have a go on my uni. I somewhat reluctantly agreed, and
helped him on and got him wobbling off down the bikepath.
On return he said hadn’t ridden in many, many year, but had learned to ride
back in his boyhood home where he had fashioned a uni out of trashed bicycle
parts. He asked if I knew who Peter Tosh was, (yes, vaguely) and then told me
Peter lived two houses down from him when they were boys. He said he had
taught Tosh to ride.
Don’t know if it’s true, but it was one of one of those marvelously
serendipitous happenings that makes long uni rides so interesting.
