‘The Unicycle Factory’ and Tom Miller.
I’ve never been to Kokomo Indiana, but I’ve seen pictures, last fall I saw the ‘the crab’ built by Tom, and I’ve have talked with Tom a 2-3 times on the phone.
Tom seems to be a legion of unicycling, and provides a world of knowledge. The first time I called him (about buying some parts), he explained the history of popular unicycling, even identified that my family has one of the original unicycles sold by Schwinn.
Last fall I saw Tom’s work first hand, with Bagley’s ‘crab’. An unusual short giraffe uni with a wheel that rolls right to left as one pedals forward, or backward. A nice piece of work and last I heard, close to impossible to ride.
I expect we’ve all seen unicycle’s build by Tom on TV or with a visit to a great circus.
Tom is a character. He talked for an hour, and finally told me that I’ll need to hang up, because he’ll just keep talking. You can’t help leaving the phone wondering about his refusal to get on the web, and his declining unicycle business.
I really don’t know Tom at all. Those cartoons provide a small glimpse of the Unicycle Factory and Tom Miller’s history. Seems to me Tom may deserve a hero status as well as being a unicycle legion. But without his presents on the web, he’s disappearing.
