Fun Squared

This last Saturday we tried combining another two sports and it worked out
fantastically. We went and played 27 holes of Unicycle Disc Golf! 3
intrepid riders teed off about noon at the De Laveaga Disc Golf course in
beautiful Santa Cruz, Ca. And it was such a perfect day, no clouds, warm
T-shirt weather! Beau and I had never played real disc golf, and David had
played only once. As novices we didn’t even manage to start with hole #1,
but it was just great: tee off, ride to your disc, shoot towards the
basket, remount, etc. Every so often we took trials breaks as there are so
many great little obstacles at De Laveaga Park. It took a little over 3
hours to play the whole course and we were WAY over par, but the fun meter
was pegged the whole way. What a great game! Next game is Sunday Jan 20 if
you’re in the area and interested.

The World Championships will be played here in 2003.

Nathan,

Did you play any shots while mounted?

I only tried one shot while riding. We practiced putting at the practice
basket for a while and I shot one right in from about 10 or 15’ while
riding fast. But in general, you need to put everything into every throw
and riding a unicycle while shooting isn’t really practical, especially
for the long shots. Maybe the occasional put when you’re ahead.

I’m not sure that practicality and unicycling have much in common.

If addressed like Olympic Skiing Biathalon, with a running clock and time penalties, it could be great competition. Throw from the sadle, ride and recover, throw. This would probably ruin any social aspect that you enjoy.

HI

I also combined the two sports of unicycling and disc golf. i have been playing disc golf for
6 years. i recently tried using my muni as a golf cart (which did not work to well in
competition, too much extra work) on the courses in new england, which, from what I’ve
heard are much more woodsy than most of the courses in santa cruz. the holes are great
trails for riding and combining the two great sports. allot of the time after the tournament i
will go and ride the trails without my bag. it is great fun. it is a very good way of getting rid
of the stress of playing competitively.
