freewebs.com - anyone else having probs with their site?

I was building up my website at freewebs.com for the last week.
Everything was hunkydorie until Saturday afternoon. I had made changes early Saturday morning.

Now, when I type the title in the webbrowser, I get a 404 message that says “page not found”

I thought maybe they got a virus in their server or something.

I can get to their homepage, but then when I go to edit my site, I get that 404 message. The home page recognizes the address, but I can’t get any farther.

Anyone else having similar problems with Freewebs.com, right now? I emailed them over the weekend, but figuring, I am not a paying customer, I figure it will be a while before I hear from them.

One lesson learned. update in WORD, then update to the web. I had stuff I added only on the web, I would hate to lose it all, and start over.

Is that a good host? I was actually just toying around with the thought of making myself a webpage. Spent a little time looking for good free webspace, but didnt find much. I dont need very much space, but i would like it to be ad-free if possible. Anyone know of a good free website host?

www.unicycle.2ya.com is running through Freewebs and seems to be fine.

Okay,
I think I figured out what happened. After going back to the site manager page, I noticed that my home page is marked as deleted, yet I can still access it and save edits to it. That would explain why it can’t be found over the web.

However, I can not UNdelete it. I figure if it is still in the site manager, then I should be able show it on the web. When I click on the delete X, I get a window that says “This page cannot be deleted”. But, somehow it has been.

I use my wife’s lap top in the morning for reading the board and it has a touch pad, which I loath. Too often, a gentle pass with the thumb sends me to some page on the net. I am used to an old IBM laptop with the red button in the middle to move as the curser. It works for me.

I managed to get in and back up all the other pages into WORD, so I can rebuild if necessary.

The last resort is to delete the account entirely, and rebuild.

Extremeskier,

I too was searching all around for free webspace. I think most of it has ads in them. Freewebs, gives you add free space for 45 days, then the banners will run. I didn’t see that in my research, at first.

I kind of figure, if I can find a site and pay 15 bucks to 20 for the year, I will do it. That works out to less than two bucks a month. But I can’t tell you where to start. I think freewebs.com was 19.95 for the year to run the site without the ad banners, but I can’t remember.

The problem is of course which site to find. That can take hours, unless you get a reference or get lucky. I am always leery of giving out my credit number to a website. I worry about “offshore” websites that might be fronts to get credit card numbers.

I hope someone answers, or just start your own thread.

good luck

freewebs is ok yeah, i remember when i first got mine it was totally ad free, ahh those were the dyas, eh?
mines been ok recently but everynow and then i give up editing it. it always seems to start hving problem when im doing loads of editing.

Yeah this did actually happen to us at www.unicycle.2ya.com i made some changes to the guestbook then went to save and exactly the same thing happened, all it did was totally delete the page and i had to make it again:( luckily i managed to restore what people had posted but the rest of the page was gone. After that i made backups of all pages incase that ever happens again, but yeah your just gonna have to rebuild the page(s)
Don’t forget you doing it all online so they’re likeyly to experince problems now and then. I suggest backup your work. (I just copied all the HTMl in a word document so if a page deletes itself i can just make the page and copy the HTMl back in)

EDIT: sorry i just read through the posts and i realised most of what i said was allready discovered, sorry
