Assuming you are talking about pedals for indoor freestyle use their are a couple of important factors to consider.
The pedals should not mark or damage the floor. This means no metal parts should ever come into contact with the floor
The pedals should have enough grip your feet donât come off. For indoors you donât need to worry about wet pedals which makes things easier.
You should be able to survive the odd shin and calf bashing from the pedal without undue pain.
The cheapest option from unicycle.com is to go for the united brand pedals at $10 US each. These are made of plastic, will not damage floors and are less likely to draw blood if you get one in the shins.
Note that my favourite pedals for freestyle look similar but are made of solid rubber instead of plastic and are much better quality. These came with my sem deluxe. I havenât seen them for sale separately but if you can track some of these down they are ideal for indoor freestyle.
I like the Shinburger pedals from Brooklyn Machine Works
And what they do to your leg without leg armor
On a more serious note, The pedals that come on stock schwinnâs they dont have any pins or anything like that, just 2 rubber things and the axle. Work well for me and seem like a good freestyle pedal.
Another possible option are SR rubber ended pedals:
SR stuff is relatively hard to get hold of as I believe they and suntour went out of business a while back. Some people still have stock floating around.
Chex,
Why werenât you wearing leg armor?! Ouch!!! Did you have to get stitches? Or is that somebody elseâs leg?
I was thinking either the United Freestyle Pedals:

Or else the Miyata:

If you click on one Checkernuts picture URLâs, then modify the resulting URL

Nikki,
Lucky for me that is not my leg. Thats the warning that comes with the pedals from BMW though. (Its on their website)
Thoes pedals are a bit expensive for me, but I bet they are grippy! Ohh and they dont call them shinburgers for nothing.

I like these:

Theyâre all plastic with rubber bits on them for extra grip. They donât tend to hurt your leg much when they hit youâŚ
(Thatâs from uni.uk.com; no idea whether you can get them on your side of the water)
Phil, just me
Have you got some Phil? Or anyone else? I was looking at getting a pair for freestyle stuff, are they good?
Cheers, Gary
Iâve not got any now, they were on the unicycle I sold the other day; my new one has the pedals that came with it.
I quite liked the rubber ones; the only real problem I had was the rubber parts wear down quite quickly, so mine only lasted me a few months before needing to be replaced. Learning pedal grabs probably didnât help make them last.
But theyâre nice and grippy, even when wet, seemed strong enough, and actually quite cheap tooâŚ

So youâre down to 2 uniâs, did you sell it so you can eat Did you sell it to a newbie, have you been getting people interested on campus?
I think Iâll get some of those rubber pedals as I donât plan on doing any pedal grabs so theyâll last me a bit longer. They donât apear to be available on the US unicycle.com site though. I did have some united type but the rubber is hard and they werenât grippy enough for me. I now have some like the union but theyâre worn out.
Cheers, Gary
I am indeed down to 2. I sold the first one mainly because I donât have space to keep three, and itâs been replaced by the new one anyway, so there wasnât much point keeping it.
It got sold to someone else on campus, so that should be one more person on one wheel.
A few people have asked about unicycling; I generally try and expand their knowledge of unicycling beyond âbikes with one wheelâ by telling them about MUni and trials riding and the like, and point them towards unicycle.uk.com.
Those united pedals you mentioned were what came on my first uni. They were quite awful; very slippery. I replaced them after my first Leg vs. Rock incident, which the rock won fair and square.

Iâve experimented with freestyle pedals for several years.
The SR pedals that come with Sems are good and stiff but if your feet get dusty or wet they become very slippy.
My favourite 2 are :
VP 611 (alloy body with plastic outer and rubber grip) only 290g!

and MKS PB-390 (with griptape incorporated).

My personal Favorate freestyle pedals are the odessey twisted PCâs: http://www.unicycle.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=213
Thatâs what I have on my Muni. Even though theyâre plastic, they still hurt when they hit you in the shin. My left shin has a little round scab the size of the little pin things on my pedals. I hit it 3 times in a row.

odyssey
I have the Oddysey Twisted plastic pedals on my muni also. They are good pedals, but i just starting doing pedal grabs, and the pins are quickly wearing away. Still good pedals though. Although not completely destroyed like it would be with metal pedals, my shins are pretty badly ripped up, and ROACH leg armor is on its way.

I plan to buy some sixsixone leg armor if I donât get any for Christmas. I think maybe itâll make me a little more confident so Iâll be brave enough to try some rougher stuff.
