Heres my problem, my cranks are about the best I can find for a 20", or at least for freestyle. at least they hold up the best I can find… picture might be attached here. Im wondering if anyone has suggestions of things that will last me longer. I have tried steel cranks resulting in almost instand bendage. Not planing adding a profile hub.
I’ve been bouncing around on my freestyle pretty vigorously, at about 180 pounds plus a little bit (no, really!). No problems with 125mm Miyata cranks at all. Curb drops only with that uni.

Very nice picture.
Who made the cranks? The failure looks like it was strictly a brittle
failure. I think that an ideal crank would show slight bending, resulting
in work hardening, and ending in brittle failure.
If you can push a crank to bending, just before brittle failure, at least
you can limp back to the tool box rather than walk it back.
I still think S7 tool steel would make the best hardware.

Max, you’ve had no luck with 125mm B.E.‘s? I found that mine only bent when I tried a huge gap/drop at the beach near Kris’ place. I weigh about 170 lbs.
Dylan
Ted the Wonder Boy bent his B.E.'s straight away doing pedal grabs on his 20"… I think he clock’s in under 170lbs…
Ya, if you’re bust’n cranks all the time, you should in no way consider Profiles- you’d miss all those tranquil wallks home, and have to decide where to spend the money you had been dropping on cranks… what a nightmare.

Actually I had been using that crank for about a year, and it was noticably bent. this isnt the first time this has happened. Once, when lounching for a 540º unispin the crank snapped at the pedal hole.
My luck with steel cranks is they get so bent I cant ride em, and it doesnt take long.
My problem with prfiles is there abuot an inch too long.
If only I could get some kookas for less than $110…
Max,
Kookas won’t fix your snappage woes, they’ll just move them (as I discovered). I have yet to bend my kookas but that means the weakest link is now my suzue hub, I snapped one about a week ago and it was only a 2 foot drop.
You may have some luck when the Norco/KH hub becomes available. I believe it is similar to an eight spline bmx hub and may provide a cheaper alternative to the profile while still being close to bomb proof (maybe not max proof though). Also they may make cranks in suitable lengths for 20" freestyle unis.
Something I’ve been thinking about is the feasibility of titanium cranks. Any machinists out there like to comment? Would the flex make it hard to ride? I figure flexible but strong cranks would be a good idea, although not being rigid could make handling really strange.
Well it’s easier for me (and cheaper usually) to replace the hub than the crank. This comes mostly from being able to do it myself, and my dad having about 6 suzue hubs laying around.
