Frankenstein --- the Beast --- and Beyond

My love of unicycling began in 1968 when I was age 7.

The unicycle of note was a 20” that my older brothers rode around the neighborhood… And then they rode at my school’s halloween event while wearing a head-to-toe Frankenstein costume. Wham! I was completely hooked on unicycling. Watching them ride was the funnest thing I’d ever seen

I learned two years later at age 9. The delay? I was short for my age. Way too short for the uni. I tested the fit multiple times per week and wished my legs were longer. Finally my anxiousness led to enlisting help to shorten the post so the seat bracket could go all the way down to the frame.

And then every day I tried to reach both pedals. Finally the day arrived where my legs were long enough and I was stoked!

Seven days of determination later I reached my target: the monumentally distant corner of the block down the street. And while pushing towards that goal I didn’t even realize how much control was being developed. From that day forward I could ride for hours and though I was skilled at having fun, unicycling set a new standard.

Next came 15 years of frequent riding, various uni milestones and a ton of fun. Then I foolishly allowed adult life to overtake my unicycling.

That was 30 years ago.

Now after getting some safety gear and a Nimbus Oracle 36er, I’m back!

And once again I am having a ton of fun.

My current activities are:

  • Wearing out the original tire on my 1980s Schwinn 24” uni while regaining good balance and control

  • Riding and optimizing my big beautiful amazing beast 36er (my legs fit with a Nimbus shadow handle base, a shortened post, 138s and about an inch of post to spare)

Nice story, thanks for sharing!

Really am back to good unicycling

Thanks eastenn!

It’s really amazing how one never forgets how to ride unis.

I’ve seen my brother jump on and ride after twenty years of not riding, and have watched a complete stranger do the same.

Last weekend included going out on a bike trail and riding 6 miles.

Like I said, I’m having fun riding again.

And truly I have not ridden so much since having the honor and privilege of spending a few hours at John Foss’s place circa 1994. John even let me try 2 of his unicycles that day. Good times!

Hey I like your signature too! Mine would look something like this

December 26" – January 20" – February 24" I hope this hasn’t become a trend for me

Impressive. And quite the dilemma you have to deal with. There are people that strongly believe you cannot have too many unicycles

30+ year old tire retired

I finally made a change to my 24" and had my LBS install a new tube and schwinn tire.

The original tire just couldn’t handle any more riding!
