Frames- 24 or 28"

On unicycle.uk.com there is the Nimbus frame which is a really nice frame at a good price.

Currently I’ve got the 28" round top version and am thinking of getting the angled in flat top type (I think these are also known as the ‘lucifer’ frame?).

My choice is between the 24" and 28" as I believe they can both accomadate a 24x3" tyre.

I know the standard pros and cons i.e.

28" pros- lots of mud clearance and option to fit a 26x3 or 29" wheel in

24" pros- better for wheel walking/gliding etc

my questions are

  1. any other pros and cons for either frame?
  2. anyone had relevant experience with these issues (for example has anyone fitted a 24" and found it unusable due to mud)?
  3. a bit of a subjective one- which looks best?

Ya, the crown is way far away from the tyre when mounted with a 24"- which, if you have big clown shues like me, meens you don’t have to work about hooking your heal accidently on the crown when walking the wheel… it also makes transitioning to one foot skills or gliding a pain. They make a 26, don’t they? Seems a happy medium.

No, I just looked on unicycle.uk.com and the options are 20, 24 and 28"

I have both the 24" and the 28" Nimbus II frame (II signifies the
‘square’ crown while I is the ‘round’ crown). The 24" is my MUni and
the 28" is my distance machine. I run a Halo Contra Identiti 24 x 3"
tyre in the 24". The top clearance is 8 mm, see
<www.xs4all.nl/~klaasbil/nimbusii_clearance.jpg>. I never had any
significant issues with mud on the topside even on the muddiest of
winter rides. (A little on the sides though.)

Both frames look fine in themselves but I think for a 24 x 3" tyre the
24" frame looks better. To me, the 28" would have an ungainly wide top
clearance that could be construed as if the wheel and frame have a
forced marriage (not based on genuine love).

Cheers for the photo.

I’ve been looking at some pics of 28" and 24" frame muni’s and I’m coming to the same conclusion i.e. that the 24" looks like it was meant to be there.

Are both your frames the square (Nimbus II) ones? If so, is one more prone to catching on your legs/knees than the other?

Hey Dave,
Here’s a crappy picture of my 26" Yuni (Nimbus II) with a 24x3 Gazz. I personally think this is the “hot setup” You should be able to get a 26" frame from unicycle.com. That is where mine came from

Yes both are Nimbus II. On the 24" I have my calfs occasionally
slightly rubbing the frame, but not so much that it bothers me. This
does not happen on the 28" but that one I ride on the road without leg
armour so the effective calf width is somewhat thinner. So the
comparison is not fair and not likely to help you. One would expect
that the higher frame is more prone to catching the legs.
