frame painting

Hi all,
This question is mainly for Noel Holland and Sarah Miller, but anyone can
feel free to answer :-D. When you had you Nimbus2 frames painted, what
method of painting was used (for example, spray paint, auto body shop,
powder coating) and how well has it lasted over the chrome finish? Also,
what if any preparation was involved?

Thanks!
Jeff T.

Although Powder coating is probably the best way to paint your uni, it can be a bit of $$$. When I painted my Taxi Uni, http://tinyurl.com/3pq, I spray painted it. Aside from some MINOR chips it looks just as good as the day I painted it. The only place that is significantly worn is the crown which will get worn regardless of choice of paint.

Plating, chrome or otherwise is the way to produce a lasting finish.

Spray paint scratches and wears down quickly. Power coat lasts much
longer, but only plating lasts years to a lifetime with daily use.

I haven’t personally used auto body shop finishes on a unicycle, but I
doubt they would be any better than powder coat.

Sincerely,

I went ahead and spraypainted my unicycle. (Black Panther)
I used a laquer paint in a spray can, cleaned off the chrome, and hit it up with the paint. It stays ok on the frame minus a few chip marks. But for the $4 or so I couldn’t go wrong.

Ken,
Thanks! What other types of plating are there? I have heard of black
chrome, can anyone fill me in on what that is?

I asked Roger at Unicycle.uk.com to get me a black frame. Its powder
coated as is the hub. I’m not aware of toomuch in the way ofpreperation
needed. IIRC the frame needs to be clean, with any parts you DON’T want
coated taped over. I’ve managed to chip the coating very slightly
already, on the wall while taking those photos I think. Magic marker time
I guess.

When I asked locally about powder coating I was quoted abou “20quid IF we
are
doing that colour anyway and can fit you in, rather more if its a custom
colour job”

Sarah,
In the places where paint has chipped, does the chrome still show? If it
doesn’t you can protect the metal from rust by touching up with nail
polish. Just about any color can be found, but if there isn’t a perfect
match clear will do.
