I found this fossil (?) clam shell on the trail while I was taking a break from Muni. I happened to look down on the ground and saw it among some rocks and dirt.
I think the top brown part is the actual shell, and the tan part is the mud that seeped into the clam after it died, and formed rock when it hardened.
I love finding little things like that when I’m outside. I found a perfectly intact skull while out rabbit hunting once, I boiled and sun-bleached it and it’s been sitting on the top of my dresser for like 2 years. We think it’s a dog skull, maybe a coyote.
That’s a great fossil! Do you remember where you were? Since Texas hasn’t been glaciated, the fossil bed it came from is probably close , so you can probably find more fossils near by! Check it out!!!
If you take it to the local college, they may be able to tell you about the organism. Or there my be a paleontology forum where you could post a pic and find out if you’re interested.
Nice clam. I used to find all sorts of fossilized crustaceans along our dirt road, but they paved the road a few years ago, and now all I find are skeletons of frogs, raccoons, boars, and snakes that my cats kill.
