Forum Moderators: What do you do? How often?

I got invited to be a Forum Moderator for another group. They said I have to read every post, but we’re taking turns among 6 persons.

i was wondering what Forum Moderators on other listservs do. How often? What happens when moderators are on vacation? For those of you who frequent other groups, do many groups exist without moderators?

Thanks!

Billy

Christ, they must be desperate!

i would turn that down… unless you are getting paid for it, or have a SERIOUS interest in doing it, it sounds like a ton of work for no reward.

I’ve moderated at times and usually the forum is divided into areas so each mod is responsible for only one or two parts. Also usually: each area has more than a single moderator, particularly when the forum needs coverage in multiple time zones due to worldwide participation.

Depending on how organized the forum is you may find that mods meet online from time to time to refresh themselves on what is allowed and what to watch for, as well as what actions are to be carried out in those situations.

Most mod activity (as I’ve experienced) involves deleting abusive posts, moving posts to more appropriate sections and sometimes gently reminding users of the rules. If the number of mods is matched to the size and activity level of the forum you should find the workload easily manageable.

Or not.

I think the main question is wheter Billy would have to warn himself for making controversial posts and going off-topic. Can a moderator give himself a temporary ban?

Sometimes the work is the reward.

Yes!

These forums are mostly user moderated. Spam gets reported quickly and conflicts are primarily resolved internally.

These forum’s are low population, slow paced and redundant. There’s hardly any moderating to do.

Redundant?

I dare you to say that again!

I am truly shocked that you should take the Lord’s name in vain.

Another Group?? You mean to say that we have not been getting your full attention? Have you been two-timing us? Who are those poor unfortunates?

Kerv,

Are you really from Belchertown? Capital of the famed “belching contest”?

Are you the #1 Belcher?
