It has been brought to my attention by a very reliable source that were are not flying forward in the Folding @ Home rankings as much as we once were. Even with the addition of my brother’s overclocked Athlon XP 2000+ (slave2school) (running at speeds comparable to a 2100+ or 2200+) and my dad’s Duron 1.3GHz @ 1.4GHz (Dan_&_Cyndy_Winterburn), as well as my other brother’s new Athlon 1.33 @ 1.5GHz (winterburnd), we are only just holding our own. There seems to be no progress in the ranks of any consequence. I have no money at this time, or else I would have a better comp than my sad but reliable Pentium Pro 200MHz @ 233. (I eagerly await the arrival of the Athlon 64 on September 23rd and all the price reductions of Athlon XPs that come with it. Heh heh.)
Since I last made a Folding @ Home recruitment thread, I’m sure there have been new members. These members must have access to a computer of else they would not be here. If they can download the Folding @ Home client and run it on said computers, it would be a great help.
For those who do not know what Folding @ Home is, it is a small program that runs in the background. It uses spare CPU cycles that would be otherwise wasted to complete work units which are then sent in to the Folding @ Home team at Stanford University. These work units help scientists find cures for diseases like cancer and others. For more information, visit http://folding.stanford.edu/ . If you decide to download the client, make sure you are part of team # 13392 (CPUniCycles).
Come on people… whatever happened to guilt? What about kindness? Please? The team called “Crowbar Swinging Idiots” is taunting me. They lie only one position ahead of us in the rankings. In time, yes, we will beat them. But what about “more” and “everything in excess”? I know you all have computers… what good are they if they don’t cure diseases and such? What about that big number next to your name? Oh well…
Woah. I totally forgot I was still doing this. It runs in the background at a very low priority. You really don’t even notice it’s running.
So come on! Install it. Run it. It’s fun. It’s cool. Help the team! We must pass the Idiots! The Idiots!
Make sure you put in our team number: 13392. (this is the Most Important Thing, and therefore must be mentioned in every single post…)
Also go into “Configure / Advanced” and set the Client Type to Folding@home. (the options are No Preference, Folding@home, and Genome@home). I’m not sure if this part is necessary, but it can’t hurt to be explicit.
I’ve fallen from the folding family. My CPU just didn’t do the trick. I’ll give it a shot again when I get a decent computer in a few months, after my job starts next month.
After a long summer of Folding, I’m bowing out of the team for a wee bit so that my computer can find itself. It is developing a whack of idiosyncrasies, so I am going to try and run it simply for a while (well, as bare bones as a Windows computer gets anyway) to see if things clear up.
Good luck to CPUnicycles, TEAM 13392! May you align your amino acids gleefully as you trot up the standings!
(There Dave…I plugged the team number in my post as my last act of Folding).
I’ll join again later when the computer chugs along gaily once more…
A few weeks ago, after trying to switch operating systems with no idea what I was doing, I unexpectedly erased my harddrive. I have just now re-downloaded folding@home and am once again a member of team #13392, the CPUnicycles. Go ahead, it takes no time at all. Someone in Greenland is doing it, you should too!
Is there any Clients available in Australia like myself for example running the system. I would like to know before I decided to take it up one day. Thanks.
Come on guys! It’s time to knock me out of the top ten in the team stats.
It’s taken y’all long enough to catch up with me. I’m only on an old Athlon 1200 MHz. Come on. Drop me to where I belong in the stats. Those of you with faster computers should be trouncing me.
And for those of you not folding yet, get with it. Download the client, put in team number 13392, and leave your computer running 24/7. Come on, we’re team CPUniCycles. What could be cooler. And it looks like we’re on the way to making it in the top 100 in the overall team stats. See the first message in this thread for more info.
