can anyone idle a fixie like a unicycle?
By fixie do you mean what we call round here a ‘wheelie’ on a 2 wheeler?
I’d probably have to say no, if it is, unless it had a fixed crank to roll backwards as well as forwards…
I’m no expert though
I believe it is called a trackstand, though it is closer to a stillstand on a uni than idling.
Stillstanding on whatever it’s called on a bike is way easier on a fixie than idling. Just put your pedal horizontal, get up, straight body as most as possible, turn your wheel to the left if left crank is in front or right if right crank is in front. Then you can lean your tigh againts the handle bars and do it without hands
I guess I should of been more clear, I meant has anyone got a fixed gear b*ke meaning it can pedal backwards and forwards did a stand still or track stand on the rear wheel only (non rolling wheelie) and then idled it as we do on our unicycles. like when a trials rider hops on the back wheel but instead of a trials its a fixed gear and instead of hopping they idle rock back and forth. just wondering cant find any videos or if its even possible.
That sounds pretty darn hard but I’d have thought possible in theory.
I don’t know too much about these things, so I should probably just shut up, but that’s never stopped me (or half this forum) before.
While I agree with Mowcius that it sounds difficult yet do-able, it also sounds like the kind of thing that might damage the b*ke.
Not sure why, I just get the feeling it may not be happy with being treated like that.
I’m guessing someone is going to try and will let us know.
Possible, probably been done by a lot of people (I’m not really sure, just my bet).
Probably not bad for the bike either.
As an aside, The last time someone brought up something that I thought something was impossible (unicycling on a slackline) I was quickly proven wrong when I saw someone not only ride a unicycle on a slackline, but do it in a handstand, pedaling with his hands (Cirque du Soleil, also, it was a slackrope, not a slackline, which may actually make a big difference.)
Anyway, yeah, I ride my fixie more than I unicycle right now, but that will change soon I think.

Videos like this one abound on youTube.

pffff, Germans don’t count when you looks at acrobatic/artistic biking
thanks harper that was great hope that catches on with street fixie riders. so it is possible but most fixies have super high gear ratios and those guys were running 1:1 gear ratios. would need quite a lot of torque to idle a normal fixie but it seems possible.
I know that when you track stand its easier to do it on a fixie because you can rock back and forth very slightly to keep balance. With a normal bike you have to roll back by clamping on the brakes, pushing your body back, then releasing your brakes, and then you can rock forwards.
That’s why is it easier to do a trackstand on a hill- as you can weight the forward crank, rock forward slightly then release the pressure and let gravity do work in bringing you backwards.
But IDK about a fixie track stand wheelie. They’re fixed so it should seem possible. And I’m pretty sure it won’t damage the bike
Holy crap
Them 2 guys are outta this world!
I have an artistic bike, similar to the ones in the video posted by Harper. Easy enough to idle one of those on the rear wheel. The reason you didn’t see those two guys do it is because it’s not on the list. In other words, they’re not allowed to in a competition. Call it ‘limited art’.
Which show was this again? I seem to remember hearing about it but it’s pretty wild!
Oooh. Not jealous, are we?
Speaking of world, notice that’s not even the world championships, it’s the European Junior (under 18?) championships. Sick, sick sick level of skill. The fact that those guys make it easy should not mislead you. It isn’t! I am a rank beginner compared to those guys, though I can still get a great audience response with a few tricks on my old artistic bike.
So yes, you can idle a fixie on the back wheel. No, you can’t technically trackstand it, as that’s a two-wheeled skill. You could stillstand it though. That would probably be easier than idling a fixed-gear road bike, with its high gear ratio, though the idle could be learned. If I’ve done it on a 56" unicycle, I could probably learn it on one of those.
I can But it’s hard on a normal fixed gear bike, it’s easier to just not move. Also, it’s useless to be able to do idling on a fixed gear bike! I’m learning backward riding now. Unicycling is cooler though
Not really, I’ve done artistic bike once And it’s because Luc really wanted to make me try… during my unicycling class haha
yea i realize it isnt practical to idle a bike when its pretty easy to trackstand i just wanted to see it done. Just one trick id like to see catch on with those fixie riders around here.
Ovo. I think.
I took artistic bicycling class with Luc. Riding one of those is a good way to understand differences between how fixed gear bikes behave compared to unicycles. Handy for unicyclists as well!
Thanks, I’ve got to try to see that! Last week we saw Quidam in a big sports arena. Not recommended. Not the show, but the idea of a Cirque du Soleil show in a big sports arena. Either get close-in seats, or don’t bother. Actually, it’s probably fine up close, but I didn’t buy the tickets and we were very not close.
ahah yeah when i told him about you the other day he was like, oh John Foss, wow that’s a really long time ago.
I saw Alegria in an arena, didn’t enjoy it as much as I would have it if would have been in the Cirque Du Soleil Chapiteau. There’s no artistic bike in Ovo though. There’s a inverse unicycle ridden with hands (rider is on shoulder pads upside down) on a slack wire moving up and down.
That being said, the TOHU is a really nice place for circus show, it’s made just for that. It’s right next to the Cirque du Soleil headquarters and the National Circus School of Montréal.
By the way, if you want to go see the End of the Year shows of the ENC (national circus school of montréal) they are at the TOHU (www.tohu.ca) in Montréal from May 30th to June 12th. There is a unicyclist finishing the school this year so he has an act in the show Messa, and I will be part of the animation group of that show too.
