Fitting a 22.5 seatpost into 25.4 frame...

Hey everyone, today it was on-off raining and I was bored, so decided to do some bodging. My ‘old faithful’ eBay 24" has an Impact Naomi saddle that I adore (Bought it on the UDC sale after I broke the cheap crap that came with it), and my main steed is a Qu-Ax 29er. I’ve been wanting to get the Naomi onto the Qu-Ax for ages (Qu-Ax, seriously, your stock saddle is painful!) But it seems every single part is incompatable.

For starters, I unscrewed the Naomi off its seatpost, hoping to screw it onto the Qu-Ax seatpost. Nope, wouldn’t fit (The top of the seatpost was too wide).

So now, I’ve put the 22.5mm seatpost with the Naomi on, into the Qu-Ax frame (That usually takes a 25.4mm post). I’ve packed it in with the plastic spacers I got with some lights, and it seems to be holding somewhat.

Now, my question is, will this actually hold? My dad was a bit worried that because the seatpost is thinner at the bottom (where it isn’t clamped, IE. a few inches above my tyre!) it might develop a wobble. I test-ran it today and found no wobble, but I see his point. I’m also worried that my seatpost clamp is EXTREMELY tight, and might bust.

Has anyone ran a setup like this for a decent amount of time? Should I quit dicing with death and just buy a proper-width seatpost and make sure it has the smaller bit at the top to fit into the Naomi? (Does one exist?)

Thanks all!

I’ve only seen handlebar shims for that size, 22.5 to 25.4. I know they make seatpost shims for 25.4 to 27.2mm.

if you are going for a shim, metal ones are much better than plastic. The shim should only need to be a couple of inches long in order to hold the seatpost well enough (think minimum insert to bottom of seatpost length). The plastic should hold for the time being but you will want something more permanent as soon as you can.

Seatpost wise i have one of the ‘seconds’ naiomis on a knurled UDC seatpost. It may just be that the Qu Ax seatpost, like most of their stuff is slightly different to everything else.

UDC UK has a 25 - 22.2 shim http://www.unicycle.uk.com/seatpost-shim-25-0-to-22-2mm.html

but it costs £9 vs £4-6 for a new seatpost…

Alternatively there is always a file and another rainy day to make the top of the seatpost narrower :D.

Didn’t want to go to that extreme in case I didn’t like it on my 29er, and wanted to swap back  Which is why I’ve gone for a ‘temporary’ plastic shim.

I’ll have a look around for a metal one online, maybe they’ll be cheaper other places than UDC

I know it sounds extreme, but personally I would grind the sides of the mount down. It’s not much (<2mm’s?), and after you do it you will still be able to use the QuAx saddle if you want to switch back. It’s not really an ambitious hack.

I have an un-modded Quax post with a KH Street with no problems I wonder if it’s a QC thing.

I agree all the way!

In my experience naomi’s have a very tight fit with the seat post. I’ve had similar problems to the one described here myself. So maybe impact and QX don’t combine so well…

I could barely get the Naomi to fit onto a regular UDC seatpost. That being said, does anyone know if the Naomi will fit on a 25.4mm UDC seatpost, specifically this one? http://www.unicycle.uk.com/udc-standard-black-seatpost-300mm-25-4.html If so I’ll grab one ASAP to avoid this rubber shim debacle I’ve got going on right now (Plus the black will fit my black uni better :D)

the top plate on all udc seatposts is the same

Alrighty cheers. I’ll add that to my shopping list  Guess it’s as was said a few times above, Qu-Ax do things a bit weird…
