Finally I get to ride again!

My package came in today from unicycle.com
http://www.unicycle.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=97
United 20-inch Trials Cycle with Monty Wheel and Miyata Saddle
So far so good. I’ve practiced hopping a good bit. I can hop in circles fine, and up a lot of curbs. Riding off curbs seems a bit easier. I’m also loving the Miyata seat as oppose to the Savage seat. I think I rode for 2-3 hours today?! I was almost late to class because I was at my work riding around in the parking lot trying stuff out. I’ve tried to work on my idling a bit but didn’t get too far, figured I would read up on it some. Same goes for wheel walking. Give me a week on this and I’m sure I’ll be doing something crazy.
Score; Unicycle:2 Me:0
1.Slipped a pedal tonight, didn’t have my Xtra skins with me, 3 huge gashes in my leg. Pretty ugly, might take a picture.
2. Thought I could ride over something and realized it’s not like my 24". Might have broken a small bone in my index finger on my right hand, hurts sometimes… not sure? Isn’t jammed or anything, I’ll wait til morning for swelling or bruising.

So now that I have my 20" Trials Uni (going to be doing a seat conversion + profile conversion soon), what should I pratice in a logical order?
Idling, One foot riding, etc.?

Glad to hear you’re lovin every minute of it. No wonder I didn’t see
you on AIM tonight. You’ll be riding until the sun comes up.

i recently got a new trials uni too. onza tyre/monty rim /susue hub(i’d
love a profile hub but i’m not made of monney) /cheap but nicely square
shouldered frame /viscount seat thats going to see the workshop /bmx
platform pedals

i suppose progression is a personal thing. but the iuf skill levels
provide some idea as to which skills are more dificult. at the same time
though, i see no real reson why someone couldn’t learn to wheelwalk
before they could ride a unicycle the “normal way”.

my progression was ride - freemount - idle - roling drops - bunnyhop -
static drop - ride baxckwards - rolling mount - side mount -suicide
mount - afew more mounts i dont know the name for - picking things up
off the ground - eating chips -riding down (wide) steps- jumping onto
obstacles - rolling cigarettes - bunnyhop up/down steps -one foot idle

  • one foot ride, and now i’m holding onto walls again trying to
wheelwalk and thinking about crank hangs,

maybe that order is wrong though because i can remember having to learn
to freemount the first time i went to the local skate park because their
was nothing to hang onto. and i had to learn to idle when i started
riding my unicycle to work, trafic lights and pedestrians all the way!

my advice is learn everything with both feet, i’m realy feeling stupid
now that i can idle/ride onefooted with my right foot and still can’t
consistently idle/freemount with my left down (two footed) i’ll never
pass my skill levels at this rate.

good luck and take those pads everywhere! you never know when you’ll
feel the need to drop off something silly.

I’ve been riding on and off (when I don’t have broken parts) for the last 3 weeks. I started off learning how to free mount, never really mounted without doing so? I can ride pretty much countless distances now. I started off doing some slight MUni… riding down ditches, etc… next I proceeded to hop. After getting hopping down I began hopping up curbs, and riding off curbs… my biggest drop so far has been 1.5-2’ off a picnic table. Other than that I’m still working on my different mounts, idling, and one foot riding… :frowning:

i learned to unicycle in the office at the youth project where i work. it was easy to hold onto things so i didn’t worry about freemounting at first. nowwhen i teach people how to ride i only let them use the wall whilst they realy need it, i suspect however that people learn quicker without a wall and i’ve seen people have more success in open feilds than next to walls, i’m begining to think the wall is a psycological comfort zone that dosent actualy help.

get the idling practice in and it’ll just keep getting better then just spend an hour or 5 learning to suicide mount , as long as you land with you feet on the pedals you’ll be fine, it looks great, i’d say its the biggest wow factor to to time investmest ratio in any uni skill i’ve learned so far.
get your pads on and go for it.

when i learned suicide and roling mounts i didn’t have any shin pads so i’ve grown a layer of scar tissure where the skin on my calves used to be, it hurts, get pads.
