My 36er wheel has served me well up to now but I’m now thinking of upgrading it. The steel rim is a bit of an odd shape where it’s joined (it looks like it shrunk a bit when it was welded at the factory) - not much, but enough to make it quite annoying to use with a brake. It hasn’t bothered me before because I’ve been using 150mm cranks and only really use a brake on one steep hill on my commute, and with those longish cranks I can control the lurch. Now I’m wanting to try shorter cranks, which will mean I’ll need to use the brake more on the hills round here and really need a smoother brake. I’m going to have a go at smoothing it out, but I don’t want to do anything too extreme and risk ruining the rim, so if some simple attempts fail I’m thinking the best thing to do is to sell the wheel and buy a new one with a better rim.
So - would anybody be interested in a decent entry-level 36" wheel if I sold it? It’s a QuAx steel rim, original 12-gauge spokes and a UDC extra-wide coker hub. I’ve kept the spokes tight and it’s remained very straight even with quite a bit of light cross-country riding. No rust. The only problem is that it’s not that nice with a brake.
