Favourite childhood book?

I would like to hear everyone’s favourite book as a kid. Mine would have to be The BFG, by Roald Dahl. It’s about a runt giant that doesn’t enjoy eating humans like all the other giants. Let this be like The Reading Rainbow, now everybody stand in front of the camera and hold up your book, tell us about it, and flash a cheesy smile. I like children’s books, and plan on publishing those I have written, so on a side note: if anyone knows anyone in the publishing business, help me out.

I thought a BFG was something you saw all over the place in China. That’s what we called them, starting on our first visit in 1993: Big F-ing Gates!

I liked The 21 Balloons by William Pene DuBois. But that’s not a little kids’ book, it’s for probably age 10 and higher.

I’m not big on overall favorites. I liked a lot of Dr. Seuss’ stuff when I was little, though. His sense of wacky design surely had an effect on me. Plus he had lots of crazy vehicles in his books, including many one-wheelers.

For the little kids of today I’d have to recommend Bears On Wheels. That’s a “Bright and Early” book, or similar, to be found wherever books for small children are sold. If you read the book carefully (only takes a few minutes), you’ll see that the unspoken moral of the story is that you only really need one wheel! A must for the children of us unicyclists.

In high school I did an illustrated children’s book for an assignment. people told me I should publish it. If I were a celebrity I’m sure it would sell well. It’s called Speedy Turtle. It’s a reversal on the old tortoise and the hare story, about a turtle that can run real fast. But he suffers from social problems as a result (like us unicyclists). Should he slow down and try to “fit in” with his community? Or should he push his limits and see how fast he can really go? You can take it from there.

hmm… I don’t think i have a favorite but the first real book i read was Terrible horrible no good very bad day. Before that i just read really thin books that are like 10 pages long with 3 words on a page, know what I mean? OH and the book is about a kid who has a no good very bad day and what not and i read likle 30 times.

The entire Chronicles of Narnia. It was like my religion. I worshipped those characters.

Anything and everything from William Sleator.

Books

The Bunnicula series, most of Narnia, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, Cream of Creature from the School Cafeteria… Tons more that I can’t remember.

Never Cry Wolf, Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games… I know, they’re not kids books, but I read them when I was a kid… more than once…

I’ve read most of Roald Dahl’s books, and also some other cool ones like The Phantom Tollbooth, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy of books. Who hasn’t read The Lord of the Rings as a kid? I liked the bread that made you hungrier in The Chronicles of Narnia. Of course everything that Dr. Seuss wrote was golden, nothing else like it.

The Ghost of Dibble Hollow

I can’t remember what I was really into as a kid but I don’t think I read all that much Dr Seuss. I wish I had though. When I babysit for my neighbours I always read Dr Seuss though. Not neccessarily to the kids but to myself…it’s fantastic!

LOTR

I never read LOTR as a kid. Or the Hobbit. I got halfway through the hobbit in 5th grade… bored me :frowning: LOTR can be long winded, but I finally got through it last year… 3 times. Re-reading it again now

The Phantom Tollbooth rocks.

The Swallows and Amazons Series .
I first started reading these when I was 11. I still like them now.

i used to read roald dahl religiously. he is by far my favorite children’s author. I must’ve read the BFG four times, and Danny the Champion of the World six or seven.

As a real youngin, i think my favorite was Goodnight moon.

That book had way too much repetition.

I liked “Green eggs and ham” by Dr Seuss. And a swedish book about an old person, but I can’t remember the name of that book.
