I had gum surgery a couple nights ago to prepare what’s left of one of my molars for a new crown, so I’ve been popping ibuprofen and only eating soft things. Lentil soup and bananas are pretty high up on my list right now. I might have some scrambled eggs later. I never realized how much I like crunchy or chewy foods. I almost want throw a slice of pizza in the blender and drink it up.
Core and cut up fresh strawberries* (or other soft fruit). Get heavy cream and whip it into whipped cream. Heap lots of whipped cream onto strawberries. Enjoy. (By the way, I have this handheld blender – the whisk attachment makes quick and easy whipped cream in no time).
Strawberries are nutritious with lots of anti-oxidants. And the whipped cream is a great source of animal protien and animal fat (not to mention delicious and good for you). The fat content will help you feel satiated longer, so you won’t get hungry in ten minutes (like after eating a banana). The whipped cream is also calorie-dense (because of the high fat content). And you need a good source of calories (fruit is low in calories).
Don’t worry about all the fat. It’s good for you. Get raw (unpasteurized) cream if you can find it (see the Real Milk web site if you have reservations about raw dairy).
Also, eat lots of eggs! They are very good for you. Scramble up four or five of them! Try three eggs, one egg yolk, and two tablespoons of heavy cream. They will be the best scrambled eggs you have ever eaten. Or do an omelet – that way, you can load it with cheese too. And don’t worry about the cholesterol. The more cholesterol you eat, the less your body makes (meaning dietary cholesterol does not affect your cholesterol level). Anyway, cholesterol is a good thing. It’s in every cell and it’s your body’s major repair substance. You would die without it. It’s the mother of many, many hormones, including “vitamin” D. You can’t manufacture vitamin D without it. So, eat plenty of eggs and feel good about it, too.
If you can’t eat meat, then dairy (milk, cream, butter, cheese) and eggs are your only source of animal fat and animal protien. So unless you want to go vegetarian, eat plenty of dairy and eggs.
Just my opinion (it’s what I would do). Hope it helps…
Get organic strawberries if you can find them. Strawberries are a heavily sprayed crop and they are loaded with pesticides. If you can’t find organic, then wash them well.
Yes, cream of _____ soup. Bone broths are very healthy (soup stock made the old-fashioned way by simmering bones). Get some good chicken broth and turn it into cream of chicken soup (I don’t know how to do this).
Also, pudding. I like vanilla pudding. I haven’t tried making it from scratch yet, so I use a powdered mix. Be sure to super-charge it… if the instructions call for 2 cups of milk, try using one and a half cups of milk and half a cup of heavy cream. This will be the best pudding you have ever tasted (and it will fill you up, too).
Oh, and cook your eggs in butter. Don’t use a non-stick spray (don’t pass up an opportunity for some good dairy fat!). Or save the bacon drippings in a container in the refrigerator. It’s a great fat for frying (and fried or scrambled eggs taste the BEST cooked in bacon fat). It’s mostly saturated (it’s solid at room temperature), so it’s a heat-stable fat for frying (UNLIKE polyunsaturated oils, i.e. - vegetable oils).
Edit: treat this as an adventure in food creativity. I bet you will end up with a new favorite food that you will continue to eat after this is over…
Another fun food to make with your left over bacon greese is to put it in one of those popsicle molds. Stick it in the freezer and wait for a few hours and… Voila! Baconsicles!
