Fastest speed on a unicycle

Yeah, I was kind of in control on the G29 at that speed, but at the same cadence on a G36 I think I would have felt totally out of control… (the same cadence would be 32mph on a G36 :astonished: ) Right now I’m borrowing the G29 from a friend to train/practice since my hub is still on the way :frowning: but I’m really excited on get comfortable on a G36.

Boosted my speed a couple notches while training for the marathon. 38.0 kmh/ 23.6 mph. That was FUN!

I’m right there with ya, if I wanna go fast I do it on skis, then when I fall it’s a safer slide. On skis I have gone 60+ many, many times. I have a broken wrist, thumb, and ankle from one of those, then there was the broken rib last year…

I’ve gone 60+ on a bike, panniers front and rear, got speed wobbles, never been more scared while on land :astonished:

Fastest speed on a unicycle, isn’t that like racing while hopping on one leg?

Just so you can be at the top

We do a 1-foot race at the big conventions. 50 meters. I used to have the record at something like 8.9 seconds.

Hey, look at that. And on a 24"! That was a long time ago. Only reason I’m at the top of that list is that few 24" racers use these forums…

Can we also break it out by whether the speed is plausible or not? Sam, Chuck, Corbin and Jan deserve more credit here.

And who determines what is plausible and what isn’t? While some people may be completely making their results up, we don’t know who. Just because “we” know someone is not a fair metric. Of course most of these numbers are not gathered under the most optimum conditions, accuracy-wise, but I think most of the people listing are aware that we’re just doing the best we can with the tools riders had available to them.

Christian Hoverath’s super-high ungeared Coker speed was offered as, admittedly, an estimate. But it was witnessed by a large group of riders of good standing in the uni community. They believe that number is in the correct range, and that he was pedaling crazy-fast (Downhill).

My 24" record is based on the max. reading of my cycle computer, but not from an isolated reading. I tried many times to beat the 17.5, but that was the highest I ever got. In between, the device tracked my speed as accurately as I could make it. I stand behind that number.

My other record is less accurate, having come from a car speedometer driving along with us as we zoomed up the Jones Beach Bike Path, which runs next to the Wantagh Parkway (Long Island). In two or three runs, the driver reported speeds of 22-23 mph.

How about this: The speed has to be measured with a device intended to measure the speed of the actual unicycle in question. Someone shouting a number out their car window (or from a following bicycle) does not qualify.

That seems quite reasonable!

corbin

You doubt the veracity of a total stranger’s car speedometer in the mid-1980s? C’mon.

Thanks, Foss, for that improvement. It does make sense to sort the list by wheel size. I’m still waiting (nervously) to be blown away by more speedsters on the geared 36ers.

----Added mine, {21.51mph} Recorded via cyclometer 1.5 years ago on my first KH29 Guni setup … I’ve gone faster since, however, been riding without my cycle computer since getting second hub.

Added mine from about 2 years ago (around 19 mph / 30,2 kmh on a 29"), tracked with 2 cyclometers (one on my uni, one on the bike from my dad who was riding behind me)
It was fucking scary after i looked on the cyclometer i slowed down to around 15 mph for the rest of the downhill (also the wheel began to wooble around a lot)

My fastest recorded speed to date is 16 mph on my un-geared Nimbus (disc brake) Impulse 36er using the 110mm hole of my 125/110 cranks. The police department set up a radar gun (see my avatar) on a road near my house. I made several passes at 14, 15, and finally 16 mph. I don’t have a cycle computer on my rig. I use Abvio’s CycleMeter on my iPhone. As discussed, GPS speed is OK for measuring average (I strive for 10 mph) speed but hiccups up to above 20 mph on occasion. I can tell you that is inaccurate because I was on flat ground spinning those 110’s like crazy to reach a “real” top speed of 16 mph. I’m not a huge speed freak but I do enjoy a breeze (could not live without it on those hot/humid days) whistling through my helmet. Just enough to un-fog my sunglasses. That being said, I am having Bronson Silva build a Schlumpf hub into my new KH36 with 150mm cranks so hopefully I can report back here before year’s end with a new personal record.
