Facebook satire - why I am not a member

Funniest video I have seen this week:

poke.

facebook was good 4 years ago when it was exclusive, these days it’s just a bit common

Wink wink nudge nudge
Say no more!

That’s what makes it useful!

Of course, applications are going a bit overboard, and for some reason, all of my MALE friends want to claim we hooked up!

So that’ll be a no then?

Just watched the video. I don’t do face book and that sort of thing, but that’s a clever satire of how I imagine it is.

BrillianT!

Um, just a guess, you’re not clever enough to create an account that contains no personal information?

Which is, in fact, illegal if you use fake information.

The simple fact should be…if you want someone, or the public, to view photos…do not post them on a site that requires you to register for an account on a social networking site.

I am a member, however this is not true to the way i use it…
I deny anyone i dont know, or anyone i went to school with that i wasnt friends with or thought was a tosser.
I found that video extremely funny, it was great:)

harsh words there. i signed up for face book a little while ago, because a friend sent me a link to it. i havent been on it since, it bored me. I did get curious as to why it asked for my school too, but i couldnt care less to be honest.

It’s totally legal to lie to social networking sites. I lie all the time to people that “require” personal information without any authority to do so.

In what section of code is this law located?

Also, what’s fake if I use an initial instead of a full name?

Sites like mailinator.com make it easy to have a completely anonymous email address… don’t see them coming under any fire for breaking laws…

…please explain yourself, Mr. Firede!

It is in their terms:
http://www.facebook.com/terms.php

Internet law is quite tricky sometimes, but in most cases it is illegal to use false information online when registering for a website if there are terms against it.

Just because everyone gets away with doing things online doesn’t make them legal.

Legal or illegal are not the words you are thinking of. Illegal implies that an action is violating criminal law.

What we have here is contract law, a civil matter. Simply violating the terms of service for Facebook by giving false information is not going to get you hauled into criminal court. It would be a civil matter if they decided to do anything.

It would be more accurate to say that giving false information in your profile would be against their rules and terms of service.

(IANAL)

I made a facebook account about a year ago, just for the heck of it. I don’t use it much but I occasionally talk to some friends that I don’t have any other means of contact with.

I like myspace much, much better. Which probably isn’t saying much. But I prefer just about all of myspace over facebook. I don’t like the layout of facebook, I HATE the apps, and I like the option of customized profiles.

I also dislike the “rules” on facebook. It seems way to uptight about trivial things. For instance, they require you to select a school “network” to belong to, but they don’t allow for a “homeschool” option. Being homeschooled, I don’t belong to any school network or anything, so I joined saying I attended the nearest highschool (which I’ve never even been to).
A couple of homeschooling friends of mine (two sisters) recently had both their accounts deleted on the pretense of having violated the terms of service by not joining the right network. So they made a new account and had to start all over again.

Although I suppose there is nothing wrong with a private organization setting whatever terms of service they feel like, it’s not very nice to alienate some of their members, especially if they want to become a more generalized social site, and compete with myspace.

So yeah. Facebook sucks. But I guess I don’t mind having one anyway. :stuck_out_tongue:

Facebook now offers a link at the bottom of albums to which anyone can view the pictures, not just members. For example:
