Dec 2, 1999

This quick note is just to let everyone know that after 4 months of
familiarizing herself with all the complex controls on her new Miyata 24," Miss
Tess Dulnuan, alias “SMILEY,” of the Filipino Unicycling Network
(F.U.N.) has just tonight in Hong Kong passed her IUF “LEVEL 1” test!!

This, as all you current and long-experienced beginners know, is no easy feat,
as LEVEL 1 is perhaps the hardest level to achieve. It’s for sure that thousands
more aspiring unicyclists simply “give up” before this point, than every ONE of
those that does learn, but CHOOSES NOT to rise any higher in the skill rankings.

Not only does the aspiring Level 1 rider need to learn to:

  1. Mount the unicycle unassisted,
  2. Ride (with good form) for 50 meters, and
  3. Dismount gracefully with the unicycle in front,

but more importantly, needs to:

  1. Overcome innate fear of bruises and embarassment,

  2. Develop (for perhaps the first time in one’s life) a rigorous
    training routine,

  3. Overcome the shame of being seen riding “poorly” in front of “lay people” who
all make clown noises and EXPECT you to fall down,

  4. Believe enough in one’s self (and in one’s coach) to know that you too can be
as good as the other seemingly “immensely - skilled” unicyclists around them.
*** That would be any “UNI GOD” with a rank higher than Level 1. ***

So, for passing the three “required” tasks, and more importantly the 4
“supplementary tasks,” I together with the other two F.U.N. girls salute Miss
Dulnuan for achieving this most difficult of all Skill Levels.

The Filipino Unicycling Network (F.U.N.), which was set up by me 15 months ago
now has three core riders here in HK, and a show ready to go on the road. We
will do a debut performance “on live radio” in HK this coming Dec 12, and then
many more in the run-up to UNICON X.

Expect more good news right here on the UNI-CHANNEL, and I join the F.U.N.

  • girls in wishing you all good luck on whatever skill level you’re now
practicing for, and hope to see you in Beijing!!

Congratulations Smiley, welcome to the wide world network of uni girls. our
assosiation motto might be ( if we had one) " we’re better built for this than
the chaps are" or it might be " my other mans a uni male" Your choice really.
Hope to see you and some other uni girls at UNICONX.

sarah Who hasn’t passed an IUF level test in her life .
