Scott,
For us…
Four airfare @ $198 each (Southwest)=$860
Registration, 2 competitors, 2 attendees=$450
Two weeks of compact car rental, Express Rent-a-Car=$400
Housing - Staying with relatives of friends in Kent, WA.
Of course there’s the optional expenses…like food.

Re: Expensive vacation!
I’ll jump in with:
Five airfare (friends fly free fare + infant on Southwest) = $632
Hotel (we’re only going to be there for 3 nights) = $300
Rental Car (still haven’t figured this out) = ~ $200+
Registration, 2 non-competitors + t-shirt=$132
Total (not including misc. expenses like food, etc.)= $1264
I had originally budgeted for $2000 so at $1264 I’m doing pretty good until
you consider that I just lost my job. All I can say is: “I’m glad I prepaid
the airfare and hotel or I’d be forced to cancel.”
I’m still looking forward to attending although now that I don’t have a job
I wish I’d have planned for more days (of course that would have increased
the cost).

being away from my family?priceless
I’m going the el cheapo route, and I’m still not sure if I’m going. I need to call some motels and campsites soon.
-Airfare - $10 (My mother works for the airline)
-Cheapest motel/campsite I can find - $50/night (4 days) - $200 total
-Registration (non-competitor & T-shirt) - $66
-Food - around $25/day - $100 total
-Taxi/shuttle to&fro airport - God only knows
-All the crap I’m going to buy at UNICON - God only knows
So, about $375 spoken for, plus another $200 or so that might pop up here and there. I think I’m doing OK…

How much would you have to spend to merely watch something interesting at
the Olympics in 2008?
That’s Beijing, by the way…
These things just don’t happen that often. I think it’s well worth it. Of
course I have the luxury of driving to this one. The last time I drove to
UNICON was 10 years ago. And that was only because I lived on the East coast
at that time!

Less than a hundred bucks for the pay-per-view, probably, but I take your
point.

NAUCC happens every year… I don’t know, I’m dithering. My girl wants us
to go to Chicago in August for the Mrs. T’s triathlon…
Seattle is roughly 2400 road and/or air miles from Austin (no direct
flights), twice as far as Chicago, which is, trust me, a loong drive even
with a co-driver and an air mattress and trio of huskies to nap on/with in
the back. I’ve been diligently avoiding air travel, on the assumption that
my sense of humor will get me shot by some snotty teenager with an M-16.
To summarize: I dunno.

Try coming from another ccontinent.
The Phillipinos are having a hard time getting visas, the Japanese are
struggling with an alien language, the Chinesse with an economy on a
different planet to thiers. The Europeans can’t get their heads around
the raft of disclaimers we are required to sign. And you think you have
problems.
from the Uk,my own experiences of the cost to get to Unicon11.
Flights 778.12 usd = 555.8 ukp
Accomadation 130 usd ish for unicon, plus more for the weekend after.
Reg fee 86 usd
Car hire, same as you 200 usd ish for my share
Food, budget 15 usd a day ish
And I leave my current job before I go. And will start a new one after I
come back.
