Europe is revolting.

I think you dodged the question. Consider the scenario where the war we speak of is at your doorstep and you haven’t paid in. Assuming the local militia, or whatever your private industry variation you imagine, can fend off the Chinese army, why should they protect your house? They shouldn’t, but they have to as it’s part of the territory they’re trying to protect. Would you expect them to be armed, supplied and fueled already, if you haven’t paid in yet?

Although private inflation protected annuities have been available in the USA since 1997, they comprise less than 2 % of the annuity market. The payments don’t equal payments of regular (non inflation protected )annuities for 10 to 15 years. The private sector needs a serious profit margin to get into the IPA business. The SS is non profit, and is backed by the USA. People don’t trust private IPA’s , for all practical reasons they are not a factor. Just like there is no great rush to go back to private fire departments, private for profit IPA’s are a non starter. SS gives you a better deal. The USA SS doesn’t need to buy default insurance, or turn a profit, unlike private IPA’s.

Some things the government does better than the for profit sector.

For instance, roads. Just look at the waste of toll roads. Engines idling, polluting, millions of hours waiting idling, waiting to pay the toll. If the government owns the roads, no toll booths, way more efficient. Saves money, fuel, and time. I don’t mind being taxed for roads, but why does the tax have to be such a wasteful process ?

One of the largest economic advantages the USA has over other areas is the free to use interstate highway system, paid for with fuel tax, not tolls on private for profit roads.
