Equal Footage

I have noticed that when I hop, my right leg does all the work, and my left just
stays locked straight so it doesn’t have to do much. I suppose my body is trying
to conserve energy or something, but I’d rather have both legs contributing so I
can get bigger hops. Does anyone else have this same problem, and more
importantly, has anyone overcome this problem and thereby increased their
jumping ability?

I’m not aware of myself doing this. To loosen up your other leg, I’d recommend
switching feet (hop with other foot forward). As you know, this will be very
awkward if you’re not used to it, but it should help even you out.

I’m pretty sure I use both legs when hopping. I think back to the “Hopathon”
competition we had at the 1983 National Unicycle Meet. A guy from Japan and I
hopped for the full 15 minute time limit. He was declared the winner because he
hopped more. I was more conservative, hopping only every few seconds.

Imagine such a contest today! Nobody would want to stop in the first 15 minutes,
unless their axle broke…
