Eccentric wheel - first picture

i wasn’t necessarily speaking seriously, i was just thinking of another way we could make riding one wheel even more difficult for ourselves.

I think it is a great idea, Zach… and Phil came up with a solution to my problem!

Joe,

Here is Luke doing a bit of off-road hand wheel-walking on an eccentric impossible kangaroo. Unfortunately coasting was too difficult to get a decent picture.

zach-jucha, I think you’re onto something here. It would probably be
very hard to ride but the eccentricity also allows the rider to pump
energy into the forward riding. Kind of like how a yoyo works: if you
push (pull in the case of a yoyo) a little bit out-of-phase with the
up-and-down movement, you can speed up.

What do people think?

BTW, on Usenet I couldn’t find zach-jucha’s original post, only joe
quoting it (and then doubting whether it would work).

Well this is decent enough. I’m impressed!

Wow, nice photo Mike. So how far did he go?

Gotta love that sentence!

Andrew

I agree, but I also think to really make that scenario work the eccentricity would have to be a lot less.

I’d suspect it’d be best to learn first on a one wheeld hulacycle - ie. an eccentric coasting unicycle (pegs instead of pedals) with a frame and everything. Once you learnt the jumping up and down to propel yourself method you could graduate onto the impossible wheel version.

Joe

Only somewhat related to EWU but has anyone thought of an elliptical wheel, something like the old Biopace ™ chainrings.

It occured to me when learning because I thought it would eliminate that top-dead-center position.

Might be kinda cool for muni because you get additional crank leverage on part of the pedal stroke.

It would be difficult to implement because you’d need a custom rim and tire. And you’d still bob up and down. So an altogether stupid idea right. So who’s built one? ;^)

I am not sure the geometry would work out the same on an elliptical MUNI wheel as an elliptical chain wheel? The rider would be lifting their body weight up & down too…

I would be happy to make one if someone would care to supply the parts. I would think a splined hub would be a good idea so lots of different crank positions can be tried.

Cheers.

And if that gets boring put an off-centre hub in the elleptical wheel.
That would give you single and double bobs up and down per revolution
at the same time.

Maybe we should also put the cranks at less than 180 degrees apart and
have them different in length

(I don’t intend to poke fun at Cubby’s suggestion, just thinking
aloud…)

seigmono have adjustable eccentric rear bmx wheels.
plastic.
i didn’t dare to try the girrafe that had one installed.

but for the eccentric impossible wheel they’d be perfect.

the upside to the eccentric impossible is that if the eccenticity was small enough you could ride it in a halfpipe.

the eccentricity is adjustable from 0 to about 15cm

i think the eccentric impossible is actualy a realy good idea.

i’ll look into it when i`m in germany in febuary.

i think i could spend some cash on such a crazy thing.
especialy since it`ll work as a regular impossible too.

What we need is an eccentric wheel with one 1135mm crank and one 170mm crank at 90 degree angles to each other. And a Savage seat. :astonished:
