I had been keeping track of an old Schwinn giraffe on Ebay for a few days. It looked like a good deal, so I was pretty determined to get it. But, alas, beaten out with 3 seconds left.
Stupid 56k…
I’ll get the next one that comes around, I guess

With three bidders putting in hits during the last hour, last minute strategy counts! Too bad on your missed bid.
On a related note, i can’t believe people bid on things where there are still 3 days left.
Hmmmm, let’s see how high we can get the bid before one of us gets it.

Sniper software indeed. That’s almost definitely what happened.

Yes, you really have to consider using “maximum bid” strategy if you really
really want something and can see a few people in there in the last few
minutes. Watch the “times viewed” to see if it increments, as this can
be an indication of how many last minute lurkers are waiting to snipe.
If you bid just X but would have paid a maximum of Z and someone gets it
with Y
and with Z > Y > X then realistically your tactics failed you.
Reliance on sniping manually , especially on a modem, is risky.
But I was much luckier, no one else bid on the DM giraffe I bought a while
ago, no bids after the second day of bidding!!! I could not believe it.

They obviously saw you bidding on it and were afraid. “Never get between
a woman and her giraffe.” That’s what I always say.
