Wow! At first I thought there was a massive explosion, maybe at a nearby refinery! It lasted about 15 seconds and was unusual also because it was an “up & down” jolt, not the more common “rolling” type. My whole house felt like it was about to collapse, and the foundation suddenly felt liquefied! I went outside and I think just about EVERY car alarm was going off at the same time! So far no after shock.
I’ve experienced MANY earthquakes in my lifetime, but this one was a real BIG jolt, even though initial reports put this quake at less than 5 on the Richter scale. Felt like much bigger than that!
It was soooo cool! I could clearly feel it over here in Anaheim. I could feel it for about 10 seconds but stuff was moving in my living room for a good minute! Nothing broken, no injuries, I hope it’s the same with everyone else.
Soemthing pretty freaky: my dog started freaking out about a minute before it hit.
I’ve only experienced one quake, but it was a 5.2, lasted 25 seconds, and happened on the night of Y2K. (Now how likely was that!)
I was spending the night at work on a mattress in my office in case all the computers went down and, like, Armageddon broke out. When the world stopped shaking, I went to the window and opened the curtains, not knowing if the world was still there or I would see it turning into a mushroom cloud. Scary moment.
I thought I was very sensitive to quakes (I experienced many)… but this year as I was sleeping in Italy I didn’t wake up at a 5 richter quake!
I am dreaming more profoundly …
I experienced an earthquake in London that was really big. It was on a simulator in the Science Museum! The room was set up to move and noises were added to enhance the realism. Wow, it was scary - goodness knows what the real thing is like!
I usually wake up at the drop of a hat, but I slept through the infamous 1994 Northridge quake! It was one of the most destructive and costliest in U.S. history, and it was only a 6.7! Many died, with 20 billion in damage, which occurred up to 85 miles from the epicenter.
There is a movement where rock shears apart. After that resonances in the rock under Terry’s house cause a 6 scale up and down motion. Maybe resonance is the wrong word, I am thinking more about wave troughs and crests boosting the effect in some areas.
Still, I am curious if Terry worships Satan and if his Pianos have suddenly gone flat.
I think the reason for dogs “freaking out” before earthquakes is because they are lower to the ground so just like snakes feel the earthquake at its earlier and less powerful stages. While humans are less sensitive to movement and much higher off the ground. So next time your dog is freaking out because of an earthquake try lying on the ground with your spine downwards and see if my theory works!
Sorry for being really smart and technical!
I was seeing A Page of Madness at the Silent Movie theater and the quake happened during the mental ward riot scene and became a nice special effect to accompany the live soundtrack.
I saw a drunk guy stumbling along on the street, and when the quake hit, he suddenly started walking normally! I wonder if Pamela Anderson & Tommy lee felt anything…or just thought it was them haha!
Yep, hopefully the 10 mag. won’t hit until after we ride Muni with the OC group at Aliso one week from this Sunday, 5/31/09! (I suggested it to Adam and he’s up for it)
